說明

The data presented here pertain to algae, specifically cyanobacteria (Cyanoprokaryota) and euglenoids (Euglenozoa), from the territory of the Slobozhanskyi National Nature Park. These data were collected during research conducted between 2013 and 2015. There is limited existing literature on algae in this area prior to the establishment of the park, and it does not include species lists. Therefore, this literature was not taken into account when creating the descriptions.

One of the most notable ecosystems in the area comprises acidophilous fens found in depressions within pine forests. In historical terms, these depressions were once occupied by lakes on the river terraces. However, today, the majority of them have transformed into fens, reeds, marshes, or shallow lakes situated on the southern banks. These areas are typically characterized by the presence of Betula pubescens, Populus tremula, Alnus glutinosa, and sometimes feature Sphagnum mosses.

A few depressions near Krasnokutsk still retain the characteristics of true peat bogs. They exhibit well-developed Sphagnum floating mats, open water surfaces, and a suppressed growth of pine and birch woods. These unique habitats, particularly unusual for a semi-arid region, have garnered the attention of biologists. In an effort to conserve them, the National Nature Park "Slobozhanskyi" was established in the year 2009.

The primary results of the algological research have been compiled in the "Chronicles of Nature of the Slobozhanskyi National Nature Park," an annually updated report on inventory and monitoring programs. These findings have also been published in abstracts and are stored in the park's internal database. The collection of algal samples gathered within the park's territory is preserved in the algal collection of the Herbarium of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (CWU). Therefore, the sources for the current dataset include the collection samples from CWU, the "Chronicles of Nature of the Slobozhanskyi National Nature Park," and the internal database.

取樣方法

This dataset aggregates data from direct observations during research, which includes water sampling, laboratory research of samples with identification of algae species and dataset creation. Most records had direct references to the occurrences, exact dates and places, checklists for territories. The sequence of actions we followed during our work is described in Step description.

研究範圍 The territory of Krasnokutsk territorial commune (hromada), Kharkiv region, Ukraine. Most observations took place at the Slobozhanskyi National Nature Park.

方法步驟描述:

  1. Field research, which includes water sampling. We conducted algological tests on samples collected from water bodies within the Slobozhanskyi National Nature Park between 2013 and 2015. The samples were collected using standard methods (Algae, 1989; General..., 2013; Identifier...). Plankton samples were obtained by simple water sampling (in cases of abundant algal growth), using plankton nets, or through sedimentation methods. Algae from the bottom surface (benthos) were collected using a siphon (sucking up the algal layer) or a spoon (gently scraping the surface layer of the substrate). Algae that grew on plants and other substrates were collected together with the substrate whenever possible. Extractions were also made from mosses (Sphagnum), bladderworts (Utricularia), and filamentous growths were collected separately. Samples were collected in 50-100 ml glass containers. Some samples were left in a live state, while others were fixed with a 40% formaldehyde solution (2-4 ml of formalin per 100 ml of the sample). The sedimentation method involved taking 1 liter of water from the water body, fixing it with formalin, allowing it to settle for three weeks, and then concentrating it to 50 ml using a siphon. Field diaries included data on the general characteristics of the water body (size, degree of overgrowth, pollution), date of collection, geographic coordinates, weather information, and, where possible, hydrological, physico-chemical, and other conditions related to algal growth (presence of currents, water transparency, temperature, pH, presence of water blooms, intensity and character of growths). Work labels were prepared on-site for each sample.
  2. Laboratory research of samples with identification of algae species. The processing of algological samples (determination of algal species) was carried out in the laboratory of the Department of Botany and Plant Ecology at V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University using light microscopes "Biolam C-11" and "Mikromed" (objectives ×10, ×40, ×90). Most preparations were made using the "squashed drop" method (algological material was placed in the center of a microscope slide and covered with a coverslip). Living material was processed using both the squashed drop and the "hanging drop" methods, using a Ranny's chamber. For the identification of diatoms and golden algae, additional samples were processed and permanent preparations were made. Express methods, such as thermal treatment of a drop of algological material on coverslips (Viznachnyk; Barinova), and the hot hydrogen peroxide method (Prygiel, 2000) were used. Species determination was based on serial publications such as the "Identifier of Freshwater Algae of the Ukrainian SSR," "Identifier of Freshwater Algae of the USSR," as well as monographic works. The frequency of occurrence of species in each sample was assessed using Starmach's scale: 1 – rare (1-6 specimens per preparation); 2 – few (7-16 specimens per preparation); 3 – common (17-30 specimens per preparation); 4 – many (31-50 specimens per preparation); 5 – very many, absolute dominance (more than 50 specimens per preparation) (Algae, 1989). The systematic position of algae was determined according to the systems accepted by the authors of the monograph "Algae of Ukraine," and the position of individual species was refined using electronic databases of algae (Guiry, Guiry, 2021; Hauer, Komárek, 2022).
  3. Dataset creation. All data obtained was entered into an electronic field journal in the form of an Excel table and, over time, translated to the DarwinCore terms. We aligned taxonomy with GBIF Backbone Taxonomy.
  4. Normalizing taxonomy whenever possible, using GBIF species lookup tool and AlgaeBase reference database.
