Description

This dataset contains occurrence records of vascular plants collected in 2023 from monitoring plots established in the Mayorska valley (a gully system in the Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukraine). A total of 289 sample plots (4 × 4 m) were surveyed, resulting in 263 vascular plant species recorded. The dataset represents steppe vegetation islands preserved within gully landscapes, which play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity in the agricultural matrix of southern Ukraine. The data can be used for analyses of species richness, hemeroby, naturalness, functional diversity, and as a baseline for monitoring vegetation changes under climate change and land-use transformation. The resource contributes to the knowledge of steppe flora in Eastern Europe and supports conservation and restoration planning for gully ecosystems, which act as important refugia for native steppe species.

Couverture géographique

This dataset contains occurrence records of vascular plants collected in 2023 from monitoring plots established in the Mayorska gully system, Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukraine. A total of 289 plots (4 × 4 m each) were surveyed, resulting in 263 vascular plant species recorded. The dataset represents steppe vegetation preserved within gully landscapes, which function as biodiversity refugia in the intensively transformed agricultural matrix of southern Ukraine. The data provide information on species composition, abundance, and ecological structure of steppe plant communities, with potential use for analyses of biodiversity, hemeroby, naturalness, functional traits, and long-term vegetation monitoring under climate change and land-use transformation. The dataset contributes to the documentation and conservation of Eastern European steppe flora and can support ecological restoration planning and environmental management of gully ecosystems.

Titre Vegetation monitoring of steppe gully ecosystems in the Dnipropetrovsk region (Ukraine, 2023)

Méthodes déchantillonnage

Vegetation sampling was carried out in 2023 using a standard phytosociological approach. A total of 289 permanent plots, each measuring 4 × 4 m, were established within the Mayorska gully system. Within each plot, all vascular plant species were recorded, and their abundance was estimated as the number of individuals. Plots were placed to capture the heterogeneity of microhabitats, including gully bottoms, slopes, and adjacent upland areas. Geographic coordinates were taken with GPS, and each record was assigned to a specific plot. The survey aimed to provide a comprehensive representation of steppe vegetation fragments preserved in gully landscapes.

Etendue de létude The study was conducted in the Mayorska valley, a gully system located in the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine. The area represents steppe vegetation fragments preserved within an intensively cultivated agricultural landscape. In 2023, a network of 289 sample plots (4 × 4 m) was established to document the diversity and structure of vascular plant communities. The surveyed plots covered different microhabitats within the gully system, including slopes, bottoms, and adjacent upland areas.

Description des étapes de la méthode:

  1. Defined the study area within the Mayorska gully system (Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukraine). Established 289 permanent plots (4 × 4 m) in 2023 to cover the range of microhabitats (slopes, bottoms, uplands). Recorded all vascular plant species present within each plot. Counted the number of individuals for each species as a measure of abundance. Georeferenced each plot using GPS and recorded coordinates in WGS84. Standardized species names according to the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy. Compiled the dataset in Darwin Core format (Occurrence), ensuring quality control and compatibility with GBIF standards.
