Description

Dataset contains data on the results of synchronous counts of birds in the wetlands of the Azov-Black Sea region in 2015. The counts were carried out as part of the Regional Ornithological Monitoring Program (ROM), information about which is available on the website https://www.izan.kiev.ua/rom/. August counts within the framework of the program is carried out once for three years and is coordinated by the Azov-Black Sea ornithological station. In total in 2015, 36 wetland sites were covered, of which 14 were sites of international importance (Ramsar sites). The counts on all wetlands were carried out according to a single standard method (see Methodology). An important condition was the registration before the start of the waterfowl hunting season. The dataset contains 1219 records for 101 species of waterfowl. The vast majority of data was collected from August 3 to 14, 2015. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, the terms of traditional waterfowl counts in a marine part of the Kilia Danube Delta were shifted to September 1, 2015.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 39 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Event (core)
39

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

With the help of the project two more publishers from Ukraine were registered. This means that despite rocket attacks, close to the front line, lack of light... Lviv, Kharkiv, Odesa and Melitopol continue to work on publication of scientific archives of the West-Ukrainian Ornithological Society and Azov-Black Sea Ornithological Working Group. Both organizations registered with GBIF and our operators have already handed over the first sets data for publication. And this means that more than 10,000 verified records of bird registrations will appear with open access.

Sampling Methods

The absolute counting of birds in well-observed areas (sectors) of wetlands and adjacent land was the basic method used in this investigation. The water areas of small reservoirs were completely surveyed from the shore, larger ones - from water transport. All birds associated with these wetlands, including those flying over it, were taken into account. Counting was carried out from an optimal distance that did not allow birds to be alarmed and, at the same time, allowed you to accurately determine their species and number. Linear accounting transects were carried out only in solid reed thickets, swampy floodplain forests, floodplain meadows overgrown with shrubs and other areas where a survey of the entire water area or territory was impossible. Observations were carried out with the help of 10-12x binoculars and 30-60x telescopes, photography was carried out whenever possible. In case of an incomplete survey of the entire wetland, the authors of the observations displayed the surveyed territory on the map. Detailed information about methods is on https://www.izan.kiev.ua/rom/methods.htm The coordinates of the plot center were determined in the free software QGIS, version 3.4. The nomenclature follows the Catalog of Life.

Study Extent The data is given in total for the entire wetland. The coordinates of the centroid of the wetland or the area of the wetland are indicated as standard coordinates in the dataset table. In the coordinateUncertaintyInMeters field, the largest distance from the center of the plot to its borders is indicated.
Quality Control The authors of the dataset are fully responsible for the quality of the published data.

Method step description:

  1. Conducting of a field survey within the previousely chosen plot/wetland/land area according to the standard method.
  2. Counting of the birds with simultaneous identification of species.
  3. Creating maps of the records made.
  4. Georeferencing and creating of the lists of registered species and specimens.
  5. Organizing of the dataset according to the DarwinCore standards.
