説明

Dynamics of bird communities in south-eastern Ukraine (1987–2017) Overview. The dataset contains breeding-season bird occurrence records collected across the south-eastern steppe zone of Ukraine from 1987 to 2017. It supports analyses of long-term community dynamics and functional diversity across major open-habitat types and landscape contexts. Geographic and habitat coverage. Northwestern Azov Sea region and adjacent steppe landscapes. Habitat types include continental steppes, steppe meadows, reed beds, continental salt marshes/steppes, and agricultural lands. Spatial information is provided as WGS84 decimal latitude and longitude. Temporal coverage. 1987–2017; visits during the nesting period (approximately 20 April–20 June), typically 06:00–10:00 in fair weather, with at least two surveys per season per transect. Sampling methodology. Line-transect counts without fixed strip width. Birds were recorded visually and by sound; fly-overs were excluded unless feeding over transects. Each transect was placed within a homogeneous habitat patch. Where needed for density estimation, detections were analysed with the Distance framework. Taxonomic scope. Class Aves; more than 80 breeding species of open and wetland habitats. Scientific names follow the GBIF Backbone taxonomy; higher ranks (kingdom to genus) are supplied for interoperability. Data records. Darwin Core Occurrence table including at minimum: occurrenceID, eventDate, scientificName, decimalLatitude, decimalLongitude, basisOfRecord = HumanObservation, occurrenceStatus = present; where available, organismQuantity and organismQuantityType, and site or locality. Quality control. Field forms were digitised and georeferenced in GIS; taxon names were validated against the GBIF Backbone; coordinates were range-checked (−90…90; −180…180). Climate covariates used in associated analyses are not required to reuse the occurrence data. Intended use. Time-series assessments of avifaunal change, habitat-area effects, and functional-diversity applications in steppe and wetland systems. Please cite the dataset when used.

地理的範囲

This dataset contains standardized bird occurrence records collected during long-term monitoring in south-eastern Ukraine (1987–2017), covering breeding, migration and winter seasons. Methods included fixed-route transects, point counts and colony counts. Coordinates are in WGS84 (decimal degrees); spatial extent: W 35.242006; E 36.265864; S 46.41837; N 47.0796. The current release provides ~28,179 records mostly identified to species. Quality control involved taxonomic validation, duplicate detection and coordinate screening. Georeferencing accuracy is 10–100 m for GPS-era data and ~0.5–1 km for legacy records. The dataset is suitable for trend, diversity and distribution analyses, with attention to variable sampling effort.

収集方法

Observations were conducted using line transects of unlimited width. Only birds stationary or active within the habitat were recorded (e.g. foraging above the transect); transit flights were excluded. Both visual and acoustic detections were used. Surveys were carried out in the early morning hours (approx. 06:00–10:00) under favorable weather conditions at a walking speed of 2–4 km/h. Each location was visited at least twice during the season. Field data were originally recorded on printed maps and later digitized.

Study Extent A long-term bird community study in south-eastern Ukraine (chiefly the north-western Azov region) covering 1987–2017 and focusing on the breeding season. Surveys were conducted within homogeneous habitats using line transects of unlimited width; birds were recorded visually and by sound, with flying individuals excluded except when feeding over the transect. Counts were carried out in the early morning (≈06:00–10:00) under fair weather, observer speed 2–4 km h⁻¹, with at least two visits per breeding season. Field notes were mapped on 1:200,000 cards and later digitized in GIS.

Method step description:

  1. Field recording: bird observations were recorded on paper topographic maps (scale 1:200,000), with species name, count, and behavioral notes. Digitization: during the 2010s, records were transferred to GIS projects. Each record was assigned WGS84 coordinates, species name, count, year, and data source. Taxonomic standardization: species names were updated according to BirdLife/GBIF Backbone taxonomy and formatted as binomials. Technical validation: duplicate detection, date validation, coordinate range filters, column formatting, and Darwin Core field checks were applied. Darwin Core export: the final occurrence.txt file was generated using the rgbif package and custom R scripts for GBIF IPT ingestion.
