Description

This dataset consists of records of birds that were made in XIX and XX centuries (in particular cases earlier) and are stored now in a form of paper registration cards and questionnaires in collections of Department of ecology and zoology of ESC "Institute of biology and medicine", Taras Shevchenko national university of Kyiv. Since the records are kept in only a paper form - the data might be lost, especially in terms of war and natural factors. So the dataset is a form of digitalized database, representing the information of observation of certain species of birds n Ukrainian territory in the past few centuries.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 4,060 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods

To create the dataset, only reliable records were used (those with clear and understandable description of the place, where the record of bird(s) was made). It means that they contained sufficiently accurate information about the find so that the locations could be identified geographically. We identified the registration places and determined their geographical coordinates using Google Earth Pro and QGis v. 2.18 software. Species identification was made by the observers and is indicated on the card. No additional photo-material was provided.

Study Extent This dataset was prepared (the records were digitalized and correctly organized according to Darwin Core standards) and published with the help of the project "Preservation of data on biodiversity of Ukraine during the Russian occupation" funded by "Documenting Ukraine" initiative. The initiative is financed by the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna (https://www.iwm.at/).
Quality Control The authors of the dataset are responsible for the quality of data interpreted and highlighted in the dataset.

Method step description:

  1. Defining of the approximate locality of the record based on the description in a registration card or questionnaire.
  2. Georeferencing.
  3. Creation of dataset according to Darwin Core standards.
