Description
Steppe vegetation is very rare in the forest zone of Ukraine. Steppe communities occur mainly on steep natural slopes of southern exposure on river terraces or hills. Steppe vegetation is also well represented on cultural heritage sites. Given the extremely high level of anthropogenic transformation of the flora the role of small sites, including cultural heritage sites, in the conservation of flora diversity is growing. and cultural heritage sites (Moyisiyenko et al. 2024). Cultural heritage sites, such as ancient defensive earhtworks, could also be preserved as places for biodiversity conservation (Kuchera, 1987). Recently, studies in various countries have recognized the natural value of ancient defensive earhtworks and other cultural heritage sites (Kuchera, 1987). The research expedition is a survey in 2024 aimed at collecting high-quality data on the biodiversity of cultural heritage sites – kurhans, ancient earhtworks, ancient settlements . This dataset 399 contains occurrences of 150 vascular plants species recorded in 18 releves. The nomenclature of the dataset is as follows: “Ukrainian Plant Trait Database: UkrTrait v. 1.0” - (Vynokurov et al. 2024).
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 18 records.
2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods
To obtain this data set, we collected 18 at the cultural heritage sites (kurgans, settlements, earthworks) and native slope of terrases of river Irpin of 10 m2. Sampling sites were selected to cover different types of natural and semi-natural open grasslands within the study area. In each plot, we recorded the presence of vascular plants (presence of shoots). Several ecological and structural parameters were recorded: cover Herbs In Percentage, cover Litter In Percentage, cover Shrubs In Percentage, cover Total In Percentage, cover Trees In Percentage, cover Shrubs In Percentage, inclination In Degrees, Aspect. The complete 10 relevés following the EDGG methodology (Dengler et al. 2021) will available in the GrassPlot database (Dengler et al. 2021).
Study Extent | The dataset contains the co-distribution of vascular plants. The study area is located in the Kyiv Region, North-Central Ukraine. This area is located in the southern part of the Forest zone and northern part of Fores-Steppe zone. |

Quality Control | Some specimens of the vascular plants were collected as herbarium for determination and verification after the fieldwork. After digitizing the data, we harmonised the taxonomic information according to the nomenclature sources "Ukrainian Plant Trait Database: UkrTrait v. 1.0" - (Vynokurov et al. 2024): for vascular plants, we used GBIF Backbone Taxonomy (GBIF species matching tool: https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup ) for the taxonomic check and implemented minor corrections of species names regarding misprints and problematic taxa to avoid misinterpretation. Then we used GBIF Backbone Taxonomy (GBIF species matching tool: https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup) for the taxonomic check and implemented minor corrections of species names regarding misprints and problematic taxa to avoid misinterpretation. We additionally checked and verified the header data of vegetation plots (Event Core and GBIF Relevé Extension, Occurrence Extension) using OpenRefine (https://openrefine.org/) and QGIS 3.38 (https://qgis.org) for quality control. |
