Descrição

The dataset contains data on Lepidoptera species recorded in the forest-steppe part of Sumy region of Ukraine. Most of the species presented are recorded at the biological station “Vakalivshchyna” and in the habitats adjacent to it. The results of butterflies registration within 150-200 km from the biostationary in different locations of the forest-steppe part of Sumy region of Ukraine are also presented. The database contains data on the findings of about 400 butterflies species.

Métodos de Amostragem

Daytime butterflies were collected by hand (with a net). The main method of collection is a light trap. With the onset of dusk 2 arc-mercury lamps of 250 W were turned on, fixed at a height of 2-2.5 m from the ground surface against white screens. Catching butterflies continued until dawn. Insects were mounted on entomological needles or placed in mattresses for further identification. Some species that are easy to identify were recorded without catching. Butterflies were collected by hand in places where they stay during the day (vegetation, trunks and stumps, fences, walls of buildings, etc.). With this method, some species were found that did not fly to the light, and it was also possible to collect material where it was impossible to use the lamps. Species were identified by external morphological features and genital preparations.

Área de Estudo The biological station “Vakalivshchyna” was founded in 1965 as an educational and scientific base of Sumy State Pedagogical University named after A.S. Makarenko. It is located in 25 km north-east of Sumy city near Vakalivschyna village. Over the years this base has become a place of learning (field practice in zoology invertebrates and vertebrates) and the center of various scientific research work for students and lectureres, Ukrainian and foreign scientists. Tract “Vakalivshchyna” is a large area (over 1,500 hectares) of deciduous forest located in the south-western spurs of Serednoruskaya Upland (140-210 m above sea level), on the right bank of Psyol river. The relief is very divided, with a dense network of deep (up to 30-60 m) ravines with slopes that reach 25-30°. Maple-linden-oak and ash-oak forests dominate in the structure of the Vakalivshchyna tract. There are groups of stands aged 90-100 years among them. Common meadow vegetation is represented by groups of steppe and real meadows. Large areas of land around the base are not processed, there are many places of undisturbed vegetation. Due to the variety of ecosystems extraordinary richness of enthomofauna and avifauna is observed.
