Description

During 2008-2019 in Kherson were published Scientific Readings, dedicated to the Day of Science. This Scientific readings initiated and organised by Kherson Hydrobiological Station of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NAS). It was established to promote the organization and improving the efficiency of hydrobiological and hydroecological research in the Dnipro-Buh Region of Ukraine on February 22, 2002. The Scientific readings is regional and contains materials mainly by specialists from scientific and educational institutions of the Kherson Region. All articles are recommended to be published by the decisions of the Scientific Council of the Station. The Scientific readings is not publicized in any digital library of scientific literature, despite its official status and affiliation with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and as of 2024 it is not available in any digital library of scientific literature. Nonetheless, the publication contains important scientific information about the occurrences of animal and plant species (including benthic and planktonic organisms), including unique records of endemic and protected species of hydrobionts. The miscellany of scientific articles contains a result of a Symposium (Scientific Readings), dedicated to the Day of Science. This Scientific readings initiated and organised by Kherson Hydrobiological Station of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NAS). The articles of this proceeding highlight the problems of botany, zoology, hydrobiology, conservation of environment and rational use of natural resources. The dataset contains an comprehensive records of all species occurrences that have been published in scientific readings “Kherson Hydrobiological Station of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NAS)” This dataset contains 3753 occurrences of 1073 taxa names recorded (344 - Animalia (Amphibia, Anthozoa, Arachnida, Aves, Bivalvia, Branchiopoda, Calcarea, Clitellata, Copepoda, Demospongiae, Eurotatoria, Gastropoda, Insecta, Malacostraca, Mammalia, Maxillopoda, Polychaeta, Squamata, Testudines), 99 - Bacteria (Cyanobacteriia), 311 - Chromista (Bacillariophyceae, Chrysophyceae, Cryptophyceae, Dinophyceae, Xanthophyceae), 2 - Fungi (Sordariomycetes, Chytridiomycetes), 61 - Protozoa (Peranemea, Euglenoidea), 86 - Vascular plants (Liliopsida, Magnoliopsida, Pinopsida, Polypodiopsida), 169 - Non-vascular plant (Chlorophyceae, Conjugatophyceae, Euglenoidea, Nephroselmidophyceae, Peranemea, Trebouxiophyceae, Ulvophyceae, Zygnematophyceae)). The nomenclature of the dataset follows original taxa names. The materials in Scientific readings are especially important in light of the events of 2023, when a Russian terrorist attack destroyed the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station dam. This catastrophic action resulted in the flooding of over 120,000 hectares of land in the lower reaches and delta of the Dnipro River within two weeks, effectively wiping out all aquatic and terrestrial life, washing them out to sea. The data from these Scientific readings actually document the historical state of biodiversity before this catastrophe and, before the outbreak of a full-scale invasion war in the Kherson Region (Ukraine).

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 3,753 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

The dataset was created after excluding data from already published literature resources. This dataset was prepared (correctly organized according to Darwin Core standards) and published with the help of the project "Preservation of data on biodiversity of Ukraine during the Russian occupation" funded by "Documenting Ukraine" initiative. The initiative is financed by the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna (https://www.iwm.at/). All information of the registration points was excluded from the following publications.

Study Extent The dataset contains co-occurrences of different kingdoms ( Animalia, Bacteria, Chromista, Protozoa, Plantae) recorded at the territory of Lower Dnipro Region. The study area is situated in the southern Ukraine.
Quality Control The authors are fully responsible for the quality of data provided within the dataset. We used GBIF Backbone Taxonomy (GBIF species matching tool: https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup) for the taxonomic check and implemented minor corrections of species names regarding misprints and problematic taxa to avoid misinterpretation. We additionally checked and verified the header data and QGIS 3.22 (https://qgis.org) for quality control.

Method step description:

  1. Digitizing the information provided within the resource.
  2. Transformation of the dataset according to the Darwin Core standards.
  3. Georeferencing.
  4. Data checking and cleaning.
  5. Taxonomic check, final quality control.
