Description
The News Biosphere Reserve "Askania Nova" is a scientific, peer-reviewed journal specialized in biology and ecology. Thematic scope: the journal publishes articles on nature conservation, conservation of natural diversity, biology, ecology, protection of rare species of plants and animals in nature and artificial conditions, steppe nature management, soil science, introduction, reintroduction. Issues: protected area, bioecology; genetics, plant physiology and applied botany; hydrobiology; zoology. Periodicity: 1 time a year. The dataset contains an records of all species occurrences that have been published in 2-25 issues of the News Biosphere Reserve "Askania Nova" (2000-2024). To avoid data duplication, this dataset does not include the occurrences that are part of another dataset (https://doi.org/10.15468/4gzpkr, https://doi.org/10.15468/nhn2ae) published before. This dataset contains 4502 occurrences of 599 taxa names recorded. The nomenclature of the dataset follows original taxa names in articles. The materials in the News Biosphere Reserve "Askania Nova" are especially important in light of the events of 2022, when a Russian full scale invasion. The data from these Scientific readings actually document the historical state of biodiversity before the outbreak of a full-scale invasion war in the southern Ukraine.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 230 records.
2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data
The project is aimed at collecting, digitalization and preservation of data on biodiversity records in Ukraine. The project was implemented by the Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group with the support of the Goethe-Institut Ukraine, part of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ukraine.
Title | Preservation of Scientific Heritage of Nature Reserves and National Parks Affected by the War |

Sampling Methods
To obtain this dataset, we digitized 221 plots which had an area from unknown to 100m2 of Ukraine from the peer-reviewed journal News Biosphere Reserve "Askania Nova".
Study Extent | Ukraine. |

Quality Control | Data was recorded according to the methodology used for the temporal scope, or the date of publication was used if it was not specified in the methodology of the source. We used GBIF Backbone Taxonomy (GBIF species matching tool: https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup) for the taxonomic check and implemented minor corrections of species names regarding misprints and problematic taxa to avoid misinterpretation. . We additionally checked and verified the header data of vegetation plots (Event Core and GBIF Relevé Extension, Occurrence Extension) using OpenRefine (https://openrefine.org/), R (R Core Team 2022) and QGIS 3.22 (https://qgis.org) for quality control. |
Method step description:
- Digitizing the literature sources.
- Data checking and cleaning.
- Transformation of the dataset according to the Darwin Core standards.
- Taxonomic check, final quality control.
