Descrição
The dataset includes the biodata of the day butterflies specimens held in the fund collections of the I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology NAS of Ukraine. Most of the specimens were collected in Eurasia – from Italy to China in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and mounted on the pins. Historical collection of day butterflies is formed by leading lepidopterists, such as Anton Ksenzhopolsky, Lev Shelyuzhko, Olexandr Lebedev, Volodymyr Karavayev, Vadym Sovinsky and others. The Institute of Zoology's memorial collection of day butterflies is an invaluable national treasure, as many of its specimens belong to morphs or species that have disappeared from nature and are currently kept only in museum collections.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Descrição da Área de Estudo | The study area focuses on the biodata mobilization of preserved specimens from fund historical collection of day butterflies of I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology NAS of Ukraine. The taxonomic range covers only Papilionidae Lepidoptera family. |
Métodos de Amostragem
The material was collected in a number of expeditions and excursions carried out during the field seasons of the years 1882–1992 by leading lepidopterists, such as Anton Ksenzhopolsky, Lev Shelyuzhko, Olexandr Lebedev, Volodymyr Karavayev, Vadym Sovinsky and others in various habitat types both natural and anthropogenic. Adult imagoes of day batterflies were observed and collected via daytime catching by a net. For identification, specimens were studied with MBS-10 and Zeiss Stemi-200 C microscopes. All of the material is kept in the funds of I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology NAS of Ukraine, Kyiv (SIZK) as a separate Papilionidae collection.
Área de Estudo | The dataset contains the biodata of Papilionidae collection is kept in the funds of I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology NAS of Ukraine as a memorial collections (SIZK_Papilionidae). All specimens are pinned with entomological pins. Papilionidae collection of SIZK covers the territory of of Eurasia – China, Georgia, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia Federation, Spain, Switzerland, Tajikistan, Turkey, Ukraine. The specimens presented in the collection were collected between 1882 and 1992. Identification of all species in the dataset was verified by comparison with the voucher specimens and confirmed by the leading taxonomists of Papilionidae. |

Controle de Qualidade | One of the most important steps in Sciaridae studying is verifying of correction of specimen identification. Therefore, all newly recorded species in Ukraine or new species in our collection need to be compared with the type specimen or at least the voucher specimen whose identification is undoubted. Also, we were using the OpenRefine (https://openrefine.org/) for checking the data quality and GBIF species matching tool (https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup) for the taxonomic checking opensource software. |
Descrição dos passos do método:
- Selection of the sites
- Collection of material in the field
- Mounting the material in the laboratory
- Specimen identification
- Verifying the newly recorded species by comparison with voucher specimens
- Cataloging identified specimens and dataset preparation
- Data checking and cleaning
- Publication biodata on the GBIF
