Description

This dataset contains long-term vegetation monitoring data from steppe communities of the Stone Graves Nature Reserve (Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, Ukraine). A permanent 100 m² plot was established in July 2000 on the slope of a granite outcrop (47.310°N, 37.076°E, 179 m a.s.l.) to study the temporal dynamics of vascular plant species under conditions of ongoing climate change. Species composition and projective cover were recorded annually during 2000–2021 using the Braun-Blanquet method. In total, 79 vascular plant species were registered, with detailed abundance and cover values. The dataset provides unique evidence of how steppe vegetation responds to changes in temperature and precipitation regimes, reflecting both endogenous successional processes and exogenous climate drivers. These data are valuable for biodiversity monitoring, climate change impact assessment, and ecological modeling of steppe ecosystems.

Couverture géographique

The dataset was collected within the Stone Graves Nature Reserve (Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, Ukraine), located near the village of Nazarivka on the Priazov Upland. The monitoring plot (100 m²) was established on a slope of granite outcrops of the Azov-Podolsk crystalline massif at 179 m a.s.l. (approx. 47.310°N, 37.076°E). The study area represents steppe vegetation on shallow, stony soils with low water-holding capacity. This site is part of the protected steppe habitats of southeastern Ukraine, characterized by high biodiversity and unique petrophytic plant communities.

Couverture taxonomique

The dataset covers vascular plant species recorded in steppe communities of the Stone Graves Nature Reserve (Ukraine). In total, 79 species were observed between 2000 and 2021. The flora includes representatives of the families Poaceae, Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Lamiaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Brassicaceae, and others. Dominant and frequent species include Festuca valesiaca, Elytrigia intermedia, Stipa capillata, Galatella villosa, Salvia nutans, and Securigera varia. The dataset also documents numerous rare or less abundant taxa, reflecting the diversity of petrophytic steppe vegetation.

Méthodes déchantillonnage

Vegetation was recorded using standard geobotanical methods. A permanent 10 × 10 m plot (100 m²) was surveyed annually during the growing season from 2000 to 2021. All vascular plant species present were identified following the Euro+Med PlantBase nomenclature. Species abundance and projective cover were visually estimated using the Braun-Blanquet scale. For each survey, the complete species list and corresponding cover values were recorded at ground level. These data were used for subsequent analyses of species richness, community structure, and ecological indicator values.

Etendue de létude The study was conducted in the Stone Graves Nature Reserve (southeastern Ukraine, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions) on a permanent plot established in July 2000. The plot covers 100 m² (10 × 10 m) located on the slope of a granite outcrop at 179 m a.s.l. (47.310°N, 37.076°E). Vegetation monitoring was carried out annually from 2000 to 2021, focusing on steppe communities developed on shallow stony soils with low water-holding capacity. The study area represents a typical petrophytic steppe habitat within the Azov-Podolsk crystalline massif, characterised by high species richness and sensitivity to climate fluctuations.

Description des étapes de la méthode:

  1. Plot establishment (2000): A permanent 10 × 10 m monitoring plot was established on 14 July 2000 at the Stone Graves Nature Reserve (47.310°N, 37.076°E, 179 m a.s.l.) on a slope of granite outcrops. Annual surveys (2000–2021): Vegetation surveys were carried out once per year during the growing season. Species identification: All vascular plant species present within the plot were identified in the field. Nomenclature followed Euro+Med PlantBase. Abundance estimation: Species abundance and projective cover were visually estimated using the Braun-Blanquet scale. Data recording: For each year, species presence and cover values were recorded in standardized datasheets. Data digitization: Field records were digitized into electronic format. Taxonomic validation: Scientific names were checked and standardized against GBIF Backbone Taxonomy to ensure consistency. Dataset preparation: The data were structured following the Darwin Core standard, including occurrence records with associated cover/abundance information.
