Description

Anthropogenic activities have led to significant loss of natural habitats worldwide in the last few years of the century (Löki et al. 2019; Deák) and in Ukraine (Burkovsky et al. 2013). The flora of the steppe has been preserved mainly in protected areas, ravines, gullies, river terraces, etc. (Burkovsky et al. 2013). Cultural heritage sites, such as ancient defensive earhtworks, could also be preserved as places for biodiversity conservation (Kuchera, 1987). Recently, studies in various countries have recognized the natural value of ancient defensive earhtworks and other cultural heritage sites (Kuchera, 1987). “Ancient defensive earhtworks as a refugium for steppe flora in anthropogenic landscapes of Ukraine “ is a research expedition in 2023/2024 aimed at collecting high-quality data on the biodiversity of cultural heritage sites - earhtworks. This dataset 515 contains occurrences of 119 species (vascular plants) recorded in 38 releve during the project. The nomenclature of the dataset is as follows: “Ukrainian Plant Trait Database: UkrTrait v. 1.0” - (Vynokurov et al. 2024).

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 38 records.

2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Event (core)

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

We searched for ancient defensive earhtworks in bibliographic sources and open sources for the study. The selection of earhtworks in 2023-2024 for the study was based on biographical data (Moysiyenko et al. 2024), (Shchepeleva et al. 2024). The area and boundaries of the e earhtworks were determined using Google Earth. We used visual analysis based on satellite images, paying special attention to damaged earhtworks that are subject to anthropogenic impact. In order to conduct a study of the flora of the area and the presence of steppe refugia on the earhtworks, we adhere to the following criteria, which could be verified only in the field. The presence of protected species of the Red Lists of Regions (Kyiv Regional Council 2012) Red Data The Book of Ukraine (Didukh 2009) and others. The presence of steppe species (such as Festuca, Koeleria, Stipa etc.) and others. To obtain this dataset, we collected 38 relevé on one system of Zmiievi ancient defensive earhtwork 10 m2. Sampling sites were selected to cover different types of natural and semi-natural open grasslands within the study area. In each plot, we recorded the presence of vascular plants (presence of shoots). We examined each ancient defensive earhtworks at least 3 times during the growing season (spring, summer and autumn). Each of the part of ancient defensive earhtwork was divided into 5 microhabitats (T – the top of the barrow, Ss – the southern slope, Sn – the northern slope, Bs – the southern foot, Bn – the northern foot). For each plot of 10 m2, several ecological and structural parameters were recorded: vegetation cover, slope, аspect. Inclination, location. In addition, the full 38 relevé with will be available in the GrassPlot database (Dengler et al. 2021).

Study Extent The dataset contains the co-distribution of vascular plants. The study area is located in the Kyiv Region, North-Central Ukraine. The territory includes parts of Boryspil, Obukhiv, Bucha and Pereiaslav Districts. This area is located in the southern part of the mixed forests (Polissia) zone and in the northern part of the forest-steppe zone
Quality Control Some specimens of the vascular plants were collected as herbarium for determination and verification after the fieldwork. After digitizing the data, we harmonised the taxonomic information according to the nomenclature sources "Ukrainian Plant Trait Database: UkrTrait v. 1.0" - (Vynokurov et al. 2024): for vascular plants, we used GBIF Backbone Taxonomy (GBIF species matching tool: https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup) for the taxonomic check and implemented minor corrections of species names regarding misprints and problematic taxa to avoid misinterpretation. We additionally checked and verified the header data of vegetation plots (Event Core and GBIF Relevé Extension, Occurrence Extension) using OpenRefine (https://openrefine.org/) and QGIS 3.38 (https://qgis.org) for quality control.

Method step description:

  1. Site selection, field research.
  2. Identification of herbarium specimens of vascular plants.
  3. Digitization of field data forms.
  4. Data validation and cleaning.
  5. Data set transformation according to Darwin Core standards.
  6. Taxonomic validation, final quality control.
