Description
This dataset contains records of regionally rare and typical plant species found within the territory of the Krasnokutsk hromada (commune), located in the northwest of the Kharkiv region, Ukraine.
This area represents a transitional landscape between temperate European forests and the Pontic Steppes. The majority of the region is characterized by croplands, while wetlands, meadows, and forests are situated along the Merla and Merchik rivers.
Deciduous forests in this region are dominated by tree species such as Quercus robur, Acer platanoides, Tilia cordata, Fraxinus excelsior, Alnus glutinosa, and Ulmus spp. Coniferous forests consist mainly of Pinus sylvestris plantations, with a limited presence of natural pine forests.
One of the most remarkable features of this area is the presence of acidophilous fens located within depressions in pine forests. Over time, some of the shallow marshes have transformed into phanerophytic phytocenoses, with dominant species including Betula pubescens, Populus tremula, Pinus sylvestris, and occasionally Sphagnum mosses. However, a few depressions near Krasnokutsk still retain their character as true peat bogs, characterized by a developed Sphagnum floating mat, open water surfaces, and suppressed pine and birch woodlands. To protect these unique habitats, the National Nature Park “Slobozhanskyi” was established in 2009.
Botanical research in this area has been ongoing since 2007, with the primary findings published in research papers, conference proceedings, and students' theses. These findings have been consolidated and documented annually in the Chronicles of Nature of the Slobozhanskyi National Park, which serves as an updated report on inventory and monitoring programs. While most research has focused on the National Park's territory, sporadic observations of rare plant species and typical plant communities from unprotected parts of the Krasnokutsk hromada have also been recorded.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 298 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Study Area Description | The territory of Krasnokutsk territorial commune (hromada), Kharkiv region, Ukraine |
Sampling Methods
This dataset aggregates data from direct observations. Occurrences collected during the Park’s inventory and monitoring program, maintained by the National Park’s research staff. Most records had direct references to the occurrences, exact dates and places, checklists for territories. The sequence of actions we followed during our fieldwork is described in Step description.

Method step description:
- Field expeditions, taking samples, and georeferencing them with the help of GPS-navigator. In the field, we document findings of regionally rare and typical plant species, pinpointing their locations using various GPS devices. Additionally, on-site photography is conducted.
- When necessary, we collect plant specimens for further research. All our observations and gathered data are meticulously recorded in a specialized research journal. This encompasses comprehensive information about each plant species and sample, including date, time, coordinates, photographs, and descriptions.
- All data obtained was entered into an electronic field journal in the form of an Excel table and, over time, translated to the DarwinCore terms. We aligned taxonomy with GBIF Backbone Taxonomy.
