Description

The dataset contains coordinates of records of vascular plant species (Tracheophyta) found within the Right-Bank Forest-Steppe zone of Ukraine. The data were collected during field surveys in mainly poorly studied areas, selected according to satellite images of Google Maps as potentially valuable for the creation of objects of the nature reserve fund (NRF). The main attention was paid to territories with a low degree of anthropogenic load: forests, steppe glades, river banks, forest edges, etc. A significant part of the expeditions was carried out with the support of the non-profit organization “Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group”. The purpose of the research is to document the diversity of vascular plants to assess the state of natural and semi-natural ecosystems of the region, identify habitats of rare species and increase the completeness of the presentation of floristic data in open databases.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 18 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Event (core)

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

The surveys were conducted by continuous photo-recording of all the vascular plant diversity found along the route. Special attention was paid to the localities of rare and endangered species - in such cases, precise georeferencing was carried out using GPS on the phone. All plants that were identified in situ or from photographic materials were entered into a database with coordinates (within a homogeneous area - along its center; for large areas - with division into separate parts). Difficult-to-identify taxa were placed on the iNaturalist.org platform, where the determination was carried out with the involvement of botanists. Species that could not be determined to the species level at the time of discovery were recorded at the genus level. In the case of a repeated visit to the same area in a different phenological period, the determination could be clarified and the data updated. The sources used for plant identification include classical botanical determinants (in particular: Barbarych A. I., Bradis E. M., Visyulina O. D. et al. Plant Identifier of Ukraine, Kyiv: Urozhay, 1965, 880 p.), as well as online resources (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=any&user_id=makitpa&verifiable=any).

Study Extent Field studies were conducted during the vegetation season in 2024 within the Right-Bank Forest-Steppe of Ukraine. The areas surveyed were in the basins of the Hirskiy Tikich, Gnyliy Tikich and Soroka rivers (a tributary of the Sob river), which belong to the middle part of the Southern Bug river basin, as well as areas in the lower reaches of the Ros river near its confluence with the Dnieper. The selection areas were identified based on visual analysis of Google Maps satellite images as poorly studied areas with a high degree of preservation of natural ecosystems and potential for further conservation. The main attention was paid to identifying vascular plant habitats (Tracheophyta) in semi-natural and natural biotopes.
Quality Control The author is fully responsible for the quality of data provided within the dataset.

Method step description:

  1. Conducting of field expeditions to the chosen localities.
  2. Visual identification of species.
  3. Photo-documenting of those species that need additional recording for more accurate identification in the lab and their subsequent identification.
  4. Georeferencing.
  5. Organising of the dataset according to Darwin Core standards.
