The dataset contains data from the results of synchronous bird surveys in the wetlands of the Azov-Black Sea region in August 2004. The surveys were conducted as part of the project “Assessment of the diversity of migratory waterbirds in the wetlands of the Azov-Black Sea corridor to identify important places of seasonal distribution, feeding, and routes of their movement”, which is part of the project “Conservation of biodiversity in the Azov-Black Sea corridor”, funded by GEF.

The surveys covered almost all wetlands of southern Ukraine: the Sivash lagoon, the bays of the Black and Azov seas, all estuaries of the Azov-Black Sea region of Ukraine, the deltas of three large rivers (the Danube, the Dniester, and the Dnieper), the mouths of small rivers, salt and fresh lakes, individual reservoirs, and fish ponds.

The counts were conducted simultaneously by 12 mobile teams, which included professional ornithologists, to ensure the greatest possible synchronicity of work.

This dataset contains the data on specimens of vascular plants hosted at the LWS herbarium (Lviv, Ukraine) that were chosen as prioritized for digitization in 2023 in frames of the NRFU (National Research Foundation of Ukraine) project to virtually preserve them in case of possible destruction due to hostilities. It omits the specimens that were already digitized. It contains data mostly on rare and relict species of vascular plants distributed in the western part of Ukraine.

This dataset contains amphibian observations collected through passive acoustic monitoring in the Ukrainian Roztochya region. Data were recorded using autonomous acoustic recorders and analyzed using a custom deep learning model for amphibian species identification, developed based on the BirdNET architecture (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.17736511). The dataset represents observations aggregated to unique combinations of hour/date and location (one record per species per location per date per hour). Original acoustic data consisted of continuous recordings that were processed through the custom-trained model for automated species detection. To ensure data quality, automated detections were randomly sampled and verified by human experts. An optimal confidence threshold for species identification was determined using logistic regression following the methodology of Wood and Kahl (2024; https://doi.org/10.1007/s10336-024-02144-5). Some records included in this dataset have been quality-controlled and represent verified presence observations and this is mentioned in attributive data. The data contribute to understanding the distribution and occurrence patterns of amphibians in the region.

Anthropogenic activities have led to a significant loss of natural habitats in the world over the last few centuries (Löki et al. 2019) and in Ukraine (Burkovskyi et al. 2013). Steppe flora is preserved mainly in protected areas, ravines, gullies, river terraces etc. (Burkovskyi et al. 2013). Cultural heritage sites, such as burial mounds (kurgans), old settlements and old cemeteries, could also preserve as sites for the preservation of biodiversity (Löki et al. 2019). Recently, studies in different countries have recognized the natural value of old cemeteries and other cultural heritage sites (Löki et al. 2019). «Plant diversity and species-area relationships modelling of steppe enclaves within old cemeteries of Northern Prychornomoria region (Northern Black Sea Region) of Southern Ukraine» are research expeditions in 2023/2024 aimed at collecting high-quality biodiversity data in cultural herritage objects - old cemeteries. This dataset contains 1829 occurrences of 215 taxas names (199 vascular plants, 16 bryophytes,) recorded in 20 vegetation plots during the during the project. The sampled locations represent one of types of grasslands - steppes focused on classes Festuco-Brometea. The nomenclature of the dataset follows “Ukrainian Plant Trait Database: UkrTrait v. 1.0” - (Vynokurov et al. 2024), “An annotated checklist of bryophytes of Europe, Macaronesia and Cyprus” (Hodgetts et al. 2020) with minor edits.

As part of the environmental monitoring conducted by the company, a study was carried out to assess the impact of the gas production department "Lvivhazvydobuvannia"'s activities on the flora and fauna of selected sites in the Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions during the spring period of 2025.The resulting dataset includes records of identified species of flora, fauna, and fungi within the surveyed areas. These data were used to analyze biodiversity patterns and to develop recommendations aimed at mitigating anthropogenic pressure on the region’s natural ecosystems.

This dataset contains occurrence records of vascular plants collected during a systematic field survey in Ivan Starov Square, an urban park located in the historical centre of Dnipro, Ukraine. The survey was conducted in July 2024 and documents the composition of herbaceous and tree-layer vegetation within a highly transformed urban environment. Sampling was performed on a quasi-regular grid covering the entire park area. At each sampling location, all vascular plant species within a 3 × 3 m plot were recorded, together with estimates of their projective cover. All records are based on direct field observations. Species identifications were verified using the Euro Plus Med PlantBase. Ivan Starov Square is characterized by strong recreational pressure and long-term anthropogenic transformation. Despite this, the park supports a mixture of native, synanthropic, and adventive species typical for urban ecosystems of the steppe zone in southeastern Europe. The dataset provides georeferenced primary biodiversity data that can support studies of urban flora, ecological gradients, environmental assessment, and long-term monitoring. All records are openly available for reuse in biodiversity research, conservation planning, and ecological modelling.

This dataset contains georeferenced records of vascular plants collected on Khortytsia Island (Dnipro River, Zaporizhzhia Region, Ukraine) in 2025. The data come from plot-based vegetation surveys aimed at documenting the response of floodplain and coastal plant communities to the altered hydrological regime after the destruction of the Kakhovka Reservoir in June 2023.Sampling was carried out in floodplain lakes and along the exposed outer shoreline of the island in areas that experienced the strongest changes in water level. At each sampling plot all vascular plant species were recorded and their cover or abundance was estimated using standard phytosociological (Braun–Blanquet) methods. Each record in the dataset corresponds to the occurrence of a plant species in a particular plot, with associated information on date, locality, coordinates (WGS84) and basic habitat characteristics. The dataset is intended to provide a baseline for analysing vegetation dynamics, hemeroby and naturalness gradients, and for supporting future monitoring and restoration planning in the Lower Dnipro floodplain ecosystems. Methodological details and the broader environmental context of the study area are described in Lisovets et al. The Biosphere Reserve "Askania Nova" Reports is a scientific, peer-reviewed journal specialized in biology and ecology. Thematic scope: the journal publishes articles on nature conservation, conservation of natural diversity, biology, ecology, protection of rare species of plants and animals in nature and artificial conditions, steppe nature management, soil science, introduction, reintroduction. Issues: protected area, bioecology; genetics, plant physiology and applied botany; hydrobiology; zoology. Periodicity: 1 time a year. The dataset contains an records of all species occurrences that have been published in 2-25 issues of the Biosphere Reserve "Askania Nova" Reports (2000-2024). Steppe vegetation is very rare in the forest zone of Ukraine. Steppe communities occur mainly on steep natural slopes of southern exposure on river terraces or hills. Steppe vegetation is also well represented on cultural heritage sites. Given the extremely high level of anthropogenic transformation of the flora the role of small sites, including cultural heritage sites, in the conservation of flora diversity is growing. and cultural heritage sites (Moyisiyenko et al. 2024). Cultural heritage sites, such as ancient defensive earhtworks, could also be preserved as places for biodiversity conservation (Kuchera, 1987). Recently, studies in various countries have recognized the natural value of ancient defensive earhtworks and other cultural heritage sites (Kuchera, 1987). The research expedition is a survey in 2024 aimed at collecting high-quality data on the biodiversity of cultural heritage sites – kurhans, ancient earhtworks, ancient settlements . This dataset 837 contains occurrences of 246 taxas names (221 vascular plants species, 24 bryophytes, 2 lichens) recorded in 40 releves. The nomenclature of the dataset is as follows: “Ukrainian Plant Trait Database: UkrTrait v. 1.0” - (Vynokurov et al. 2024), “An annotated checklist of bryophytes of Europe, Macaronesia and Cyprus” (Hodgetts et al. 2020), and “The fourth checklist of Ukrainian Lichen-forming and lichenicolous fungi with analysis of current additions” (Kondratyuk et al. 2021), with minor edits.

In 2024–2025, a comprehensive study of vascular plant diversity was carried out in an oak forest near the village of Myrotske, Kyiv Region, belonging to the Klavdiivka Forestry of the State Enterprise “Klavdiivka Forest Research Station”. The oak stand (compartment 20, plot 9, area 14.6 ha) (Didukh, 2025). Forest ecosystems have partially experienced significant anthropogenic impact as a result of fortification construction by Russian troops in 2022, which caused damage to the soil and vegetation cover, changes in microclimatic conditions, and alterations in the ecosystem structure (Moysiyenko et al., 2025). The aim of the study was to assess the state of vegetation and document changes in the structure and species composition of the oak forest affected by the construction of fortifications. This dataset contains occurrences of 203 vascular plants species recorded in 30 relevés. Checklist of vascular plants of the projected Dubyna Forest Reserve (Myrotske, Kyiv Region, Ukraine) - Version 1.0

In 2024 and 2025 years, we conducted a study of the biodiversity of the flora from the oak forest near the Myrotske village in the Kyiv Region. The Myrotske Oak Forest belongs to the Klavdiievske Forestry of the State Enterprise «Klavdiievska Forest Research Station». The aim of this study was to conduct an inventory of flora of the Myrotske Oak Forest. This checklist was created using field methods, Vegapp application (Schmidtlein & Chitin Software 2024) and iNaturalist application (iNaturalist & California Academy of Science 2011), that formed the basis of this dataset during trips in 2024 and 2025 years. In total, the checklist flora of projected reserve «Dubyna» including 263 species. This is an ancient oak woodland of the Betonico-Quercetum (Quercion roboris) association with presence of protected species of vascular plant: The following species are subject to protection under the Bern Convention (Resolution No. 6): Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb., Iris aphylla L., Lilium martagon L., Cephalanthera longifolia (L.) Fritsch and Platanthera bifolia (Red Data Book of Ukraine). The same applies to the following species, which are listed in the Digitalis grandiflora Mill and Veratrum lobelianum Bernh. (Red Data List of Kyiv Region). This oak forest was partially damaged during the construction of field fortifications that were formed during russian armed aggression against Ukraine (Didukh, 2025; Moysiyenko, 2025). Betula borysthenica Klokov is a protected species included in the Red Data Book of Ukraine (Didukh 2009a). Biotop of Betula borysthenica Klokov is included in the Green Data Book of Ukraine (Didukh 2009b). The Betula borysthenica Klokov is endemic to the steppe zone of Eastern Europe, with most of its range located in Ukraine, mainly in the south: in the lower reaches of the Southern Buh and Dnipro (Boiko et al., 2005) Rare Betula borysthenica forests are common in the sandy steppe and are mostly fragmented into small groves (kolky). These forests are protected on the territory of the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve (Popovych, 2002), the Oleshky Sands and Biloberezhzhia Sviatoslav's National Nature Parks, the Kinburn Spit Regional Landscape Park, the Sahy Landscape Reserve, and the Berezovi Kolky Forest Reserve in Kherson and Mykolaiv administrative Regions (Tarieiev et al., 2013). This dataset contains occurrences of Betula borysthenica Klokov of flora recorded in the Oleshky Sands and Biloberezhzhia Sviatoslav's National Nature Parks, the Kinburn Spit Regional Landscape Park, the Sahy Landscape Reserve, and the Berezovi Kolky Forest Reserve in Kherson and Mykolaiv administrative Regions and surroundings based on remote sensing data in Google Earth during 2019.

Dynamics of bird communities in south-eastern Ukraine (1987–2017) Overview. The dataset contains breeding-season bird occurrence records collected across the south-eastern steppe zone of Ukraine from 1987 to 2017. It supports analyses of long-term community dynamics and functional diversity across major open-habitat types and landscape contexts. Geographic and habitat coverage. Northwestern Azov Sea region and adjacent steppe landscapes. Habitat types include continental steppes, steppe meadows, reed beds, continental salt marshes/steppes, and agricultural lands. Spatial information is provided as WGS84 decimal latitude and longitude. Temporal coverage. 1987–2017; visits during the nesting period (approximately 20 April–20 June), typically 06:00–10:00 in fair weather, with at least two surveys per season per transect. Sampling methodology. Line-transect counts without fixed strip width. Birds were recorded visually and by sound; fly-overs were excluded unless feeding over transects. Each transect was placed within a homogeneous habitat patch. Where needed for density estimation, detections were analysed with the Distance framework. Taxonomic scope. Class Aves; more than 80 breeding species of open and wetland habitats. Scientific names follow the GBIF Backbone taxonomy; higher ranks (kingdom to genus) are supplied for interoperability. Data records. Darwin Core Occurrence table including at minimum: occurrenceID, eventDate, scientificName, decimalLatitude, decimalLongitude, basisOfRecord = HumanObservation, occurrenceStatus = present; where available, organismQuantity and organismQuantityType, and site or locality. Quality control. Field forms were digitised and georeferenced in GIS; taxon names were validated against the GBIF Backbone; coordinates were range-checked (−90…90; −180…180). Climate covariates used in associated analyses are not required to reuse the occurrence data. Intended use. Time-series assessments of avifaunal change, habitat-area effects, and functional-diversity applications in steppe and wetland systems. Please cite the dataset when used.

In 2025, we conducted a study of the biodiversity of the flora of the earthen ramparts of the Bilsk settlement in the Poltava Region. The Bilsk settlement of the Scythian era was the political, economic, cultural, and religious center of the early Iron Age tribes living in the Vorskla River basin. It covers an area of over 5,000 hectares, and the length of the ramparts is almost 38 km, unrivaled among archaeological sites of this period in terms of scale and preservation (Shramko, 2016). The aim of this study was to conduct an inventory of the autumn flora of the earth ramparts of the Bilsk settlement. In total, we recorded seven floristic lists using the Vegapp application (Schmidtlein & Chitin Software 2024), which formed the basis of this dataset during the trip in 2025. This dataset contains 641 occurrences of 251 vascular plant species in 7 localities during the expedition. The nomenclature of the dataset is as follows: «Ukrainian Plant Trait Database: UkrTrait v. 1.0» - (Vynokurov et al. 2024).

This dataset contains occurrence records of vascular plants collected in 2023 from monitoring plots established in the Mayorska valley (a gully system in the Dnipropetrovsk region, Ukraine). A total of 289 sample plots (4 × 4 m) were surveyed, resulting in 263 vascular plant species recorded. The dataset represents steppe vegetation islands preserved within gully landscapes, which play a crucial role in maintaining biodiversity in the agricultural matrix of southern Ukraine. The data can be used for analyses of species richness, hemeroby, naturalness, functional diversity, and as a baseline for monitoring vegetation changes under climate change and land-use transformation. The resource contributes to the knowledge of steppe flora in Eastern Europe and supports conservation and restoration planning for gully ecosystems, which act as important refugia for native steppe species.

This dataset contains long-term vegetation monitoring data from steppe communities of the Stone Graves Nature Reserve (Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, Ukraine). A permanent 100 m² plot was established in July 2000 on the slope of a granite outcrop (47.310°N, 37.076°E, 179 m a.s.l.) to study the temporal dynamics of vascular plant species under conditions of ongoing climate change. Species composition and projective cover were recorded annually during 2000–2021 using the Braun-Blanquet method. In total, 79 vascular plant species were registered, with detailed abundance and cover values. The dataset provides unique evidence of how steppe vegetation responds to changes in temperature and precipitation regimes, reflecting both endogenous successional processes and exogenous climate drivers. These data are valuable for biodiversity monitoring, climate change impact assessment, and ecological modeling of steppe ecosystems.

This dataset contains macrophyte species occurrence records collected in 2024 from floodplain water bodies within the Dnipro-Orilskyi Nature Reserve, located in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, central Ukraine. The data were obtained through standardized field surveys across 16 aquatic habitats representing a range of hydrological conditions and successional stages. For each sampling site, the presence and relative abundance of vascular aquatic and semi-aquatic plant species were recorded using a semi-quantitative scale (1–5). Geographic coordinates were recorded using handheld GPS devices. This dataset contributes to long-term biodiversity monitoring of freshwater vegetation in protected floodplain ecosystems and provides a basis for assessing ecological changes driven by river regulation and climatic impacts.

Field observations were conducted within a regular sampling grid using standard Braun-Blanquet phytosociological methods. The data include species identity, abundance, and precise geographic coordinates. The dataset aims to support biodiversity monitoring, post-disaster assessment, and ecological restoration efforts in the lower Dnipro region.

The dataset contains 449 lichen and lichenicolous fungi observations from the F.E. Faltz-Fein Biosphere Reserve “Askania-Nova”. It is based on own field data and herbarium specimens collected between 1991 and 2020. The results of the author's research in the Biosphere Reserve “Askania-Nova” have been published in several papers (e.g. Ходосовцев, 1999, 2008; Ходосовцев, Ходосовцева, 2014, Ходосовцев, Дармостук, 2017; Ходосовцев та ін, 2017, 2021, Ходосовцев, Шаповал, 2024; Darmostuk et al., 2021: Khodosovtsev, Darmostuk, 2020), but the species lists or records (except for a few taxa) were without specific localities and geopositions within the territory. A few old herbarium collections from Askania-Nova in 1924 and 1931 without georeference data in KW were recently studied and corrected (Khodosovtsev, Shapoval, 2024). Only a few data such as Caloplaca stillicidiorum, Lecania ephedrae, L. koerberiana (Окснер, 1993), Ramalina dilacerata (Кондратюк, Навроцька, 1992), Diplotomma alboatrum (Окснер, 2010) were not found in the field during the visit to Askania-Nova and in the herbarium (KW-L). The literature sources for these species are also included in the dataset. The list of species was mainly based on the recent publication (Ходосовцев, Шаповал, 2024), where the history of lichen research during 100 years is presented. The total list in the dataset included 143 species of lichens and lichenicolous fungi.

Ancient defensive earthwork fortifications—ramparts—were selected as the research subject. The most renowned among them are the Zmiievi Valy, a multi-tiered system of defensive structures constructed during the period of Kyivan Rus. Their total length originally measured 969.5 km; however, according to the findings of archaeologist Mykhailo Kuchera in 1987, only 234 km (24.1%) remained preserved by that time (Kuchera 1987, 2005). Additionally, ramparts were often constructed around cities for defensive purposes. While these fortifications have been extensively studied from historical and archaeological perspectives, their biodiversity remains poorly explored. Only a limited number of studies have addressed this subject (Parnikoza et al. 2009; Vasyliuk et al. 2012; Perehrym et al. 2017). This dataset contains 891 occurrences of 359 vascular plant species recorded in 10 floristic lists during the project. The nomenclature of the dataset is as follows: “Ukrainian Plant Trait Database: UkrTrait v. 1.0” - (Vynokurov et al. 2024).

The dataset comprises the biodata on the specimens of chrysidid wasps held mainly in the fund collections of the I.I. A small river, Topirets flows in the Buchansky district of the Kyiv oblast (Ukraine). The length of this river is 13 kilometers. Several streams flow into Topirets river. Starting from Nemishaieve to the mouth, the river bed is an almost continuous cascade of ponds. In 2024, we collected data on aquatic vascular plants that grew there. Also, this list includes some plants that grew on swamps. Our dataset contains 80 occurrences of 16 species.

These data were partially used for the preparation of two conference papers (Olshanskyi et al., 2024; Olshanskyi & Lisovskyi, 2024).

According to various literary data, there are currently over 50,000 kurgans located within the territory of Ukraine, including those situated in the forest zone. However, due to excessive and uncontrolled agricultural activities, the actions of “black” archaeologists, and the ongoing active military conflicts within Ukraine, the number of kurgans in the country is decreasing sharply every year, particularly in areas associated with the steppe zone. Consequently, their ecological significance is increasingly recognized by scientists, as kurgans play a crucial role in preserving and restoring steppe vegetation. While the kurgans of the steppe and forest-steppe zones in the Kherson, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad, Dnipopetrovsk, Cherkasy, and Poltava regions have been studied by researchers (I. Moysiyenko, B. Sudnik-Voitsikovska, I. Dembich, A. Shaposhnikova, E. Yevtushenko, etc.), the kurgans in the forest zone, specifically within the Kyiv and Zhytomyr Polissia, remain unexplored. Therefore, studying kurgans, particularly in the forest zone of Central Polissia, Ukraine, where they were investigated by us for the first time, is highly relevant today. This dataset contains 1226 occurrences of 214 species vascular plants of flora recorded in 10 kurgans during the project. The nomenclature of the dataset follows “Plants of the World Online” – (POWO 2024) with minor edits.

The botanical nature monument of local significance, the "Kozatski Maidany" kurgan, is located in the Cherkasy District of Cherkasy Region, Ukraine (49.063472° N, 32.141861° E; 207 meters above sea level). The kurgan has a height of 4.5 meters and a diameter of 80 meters. It hosts 159 species of vascular plants, including numerous steppe species. Among these, several are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, such as Iris hungarica and Stipa capillata, as well as in the Red List of Cherkasy Region, including Amygdalus nana, Anemone sylvestris, Aster amellus, Asyneuma canescens, Cerasus fruticosa, Iris pumila, Jurinea calcarea, Jurinea salicifolia, Phlomis pungens, and Vinca herbacea (Sudnik-Wójcikowska, Moysiyenko, 2010). This dataset contains occurrences of 73 species (vascular plants) recorded in 11 releve (vegetation survey) during the project. In 2023, we conducted a study of the biodiversity of the flora of Traian's (Troian’s) earthworks in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi ditstrict, Odesa region. Traian's Wall is the name used for several linear earthen fortifications found across Eastern Europe, Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine ((Sapozhnikov 2011, Zharkikh 2024). The aim of this study was to highlight the importance of flora inventory as a necessary condition for monitoring and preserving phytodiversity. In total, we compiled 4 floristic lists using the Vegapp app, which formed the basis of this dataset during trip in 2024. This dataset contains 282 occurrences of 164 vascular plant species recorded in 4 floristic lists during the project. The dataset include occurrences from the dry bottom of the upper part of the former Kakhovka reservoir at the territory of Zaporizhzhia District, Zaporizhzhia Region. Kakhovka reservoir disappeared after the Russian terrorist attack on the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) (Kherson Region). This dataset contains 178 occurrences of 79 vascular plants species of Nechayeva Mohyla Kurgan flora. This is the highest Scythian mound in the steppe zone of Eurasia. Its current dimensions are approximately 15 meters in height, 110–120 meters in diameter, and 300–320 meters in circumference. The kurgan dates back to the 6th century BC and holds the status of a national archaeological monument. The kurgan is situated 4 km northeast of the village of Lebedynske, in the Nikopol district of the Dnipropetrovsk region, on a watershed plateau at the upper reaches of the Solona, Tomakivka, and Kamyshuvata Sura rivers. Historically, the kurgan was utilized by the Zaporizhian Cossacks as a guard post. In the 19th century, it was named after the landowners Nechayev and Hegelyn, who owned the surrounding territories. During the winter of 1943–1944, the kurgan served as a stronghold for German forces. At that time the top of the mound was removed, and the embankment was fortified with dugouts, firing positions, trenches, and communication passages. Archaeological finds in the vicinity of the kurgan include fragments of ancient Greek amphorae. In recent years, the kurgan has suffered damage due to illegal excavations conducted by unknown individuals in 2018 and 2024, presumably for the purpose of looting. At the base of the mound, a memorial to Soviet soldiers has been installed. Additionally, a metal staircase was constructed on the northern side, leading to the top, where a state triangulation marker has been placed.

In 2024, we conducted a study of the biodiversity of the flora of Obukhovychi village in Vyshkohorde district, Kyiv region. The aim of the research was to find valuable areas for the creation of new protected areas. As a result of the research, we propose to create 10 new sites of the nature reserve fund (Moisienko et al., 2024): three landscape reserves of local importance and 7 natural monuments of local importance. We also carried out flora inventory. In total, we compiled 20 floristic lists using the Vegapp app, which formed the basis of this dataset during 4 field trips in 2024. The dataset includes the results of field research conducted in 2022-2024 in the Kirovohrad Region to prepare a scientific justification and create the first national park in the region. The scientific substantiation of the need to create the Chornolisko-Bokovenkivskyi National Nature Park was developed by the NGO Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group in 2023 (Moysiyenko et al., 2023). The proposed national nature park includes two quite distant from each other units. Chornolisko-Bokovenkivsky includes the Chornolis and Chutiv forest areas, the valley of the upper Inhulets River, located on the territory of Oleksandrivska settlement territorial community, Dmytrivska, Subotsivka rural territorial communities and the regional landscape park ‘Bokovenki named M.L. Davydov’, located on the territory of Dolyna city territorial community and Huriv rural community of Kropyvnytsk District of Kirovohrad Region. These are two of the southernmost large watersheds of broadleaf forests with a total area of about 13 thousand hectares. The Veseli Bokovenky branch is located in the south of Kirovohrad Region, on the territory of the Dolynska urban territorial community and the Hurivska rural community of the Kropyvnytskyi district. The Bokovenki branch is being created on the basis of the regional landscape park “Bokovenky named M.L. Davydov”. The unit will protect the valleys of the Bokova and Bokovenka rivers, as well as numerous beams that flow into them. Here, the slopes contain large areas of steppes and granite outcrops, as well as a number of other habitats. The department will also include the Veseli Bokovenki dendrological park, founded in 1893. This dataset contains 687 occurrences of 385 species of vascular plants recorded. The study area is located in the southern part of the steppe zone of Ukraine, in the Mykolaiv administrative Region. The Voznesensk arena of the Southern Buh sands is highly transformed. Almost all of its territory is occupied by artificial forest plantations, used as agricultural land, sand quarries, or built up. Anthropogenic activities have led to significant loss of natural habitats worldwide in the last few years of the century (Löki et al. 2019; Deák) and in Ukraine (Burkovsky et al. 2013). The flora of the steppe has been preserved mainly in protected areas, ravines, gullies, river terraces, etc. (Burkovsky et al. 2013). Cultural heritage sites, such as ancient defensive earhtworks, could also be preserved as places for biodiversity conservation (Kuchera, 1987). Recently, studies in various countries have recognized the natural value of ancient defensive earhtworks and other cultural heritage sites (Kuchera, 1987). “Ancient defensive earhtworks as a refugium for steppe flora in anthropogenic landscapes of Ukraine “ is a research expedition in 2023/2024 aimed at collecting high-quality data on the biodiversity of cultural heritage sites - earhtworks. European steppes are among the most threatened ecosystems due to the conversion to arable land mostly. Abandonment or land acquisitions to protect nature may give a chance for the passive recovery of steppes. We used an exceptional opportunity to study nearly 100 yrs of old-field succession chronosequence to assess the speed and overall effectiveness of such recovery. We performed the research in the largest European steppe protection site, the Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve and its buffer zone, located in Southern Ukraine. To achieve a sufficient temporal scope, instead of long-term research, we apply an approach of substituting space for time, using old fields of different ages (Walker et al., 2010). The studied chronosequence was an exceptional opportunity as permanent abandonment is rarely observed in the studied region (usually after several to dozen of years the land is ploughed again). In this study, we wanted to assess the rate and overall effectiveness of passive recovery on old fields in the European grass steppe. To get a comprehensive picture of steppe recovery we explored not only plant species diversity patterns and basic soil parameters, but also functional trait responses, which provide insights into the mechanisms triggering community assembly and succession processes (Kahmen and Poschlod, 2004). This dataset contains 2413 occurrences of 172 species (135 vascular plants, 34 bryophytes, 3 lichens) recorded in 72 normal vegetation plots during the May 2017. The sampled locations represent one of types of grasslands - steppes focused on classes Festuco-Brometea. The dataset comprises records on fungi and fungi-like protists from Krasnokutsk hromada (commune) territory. That administrative area is situated northwest of the Kharkiv region, Ukraine, and represents typical landscapes at the interface between temperate European forests and semi-arid Pontic Steppes. Most of the area is covered by croplands, but wetlands, meadows, and forests extend along Merla and Merchik rivers. The dominant tree species in deciduous forests are Quercus robur, Acer platanoides, Tilia cordata, Fraxinus excelsior, and Ulmus spp., whereas coniferous forests are primary Pinus sylvestris plantations.

The most remarkable habitats there are acidophilous fens in depressions in pine forests. Historically, they were lakes at the river terrace. However, most are currently fens, reeds, marshes, or shallow lakes on southern banks outlined with Betula pubescens, Populus tremula, Alnus glutinosa, and sometimes with Sphagnum mosses. A few depressions near Krasnokutsk still resemble true peat bogs, with developed Sphagnum floating mat, open water surface, and suppressed pine and birch woods. Those habitats, exotic for a semi-arid zone, attracted biologists’ attention, and to protect them, the National Nature Park “Slobozhanskyi” was established in 2009.

Since 2007, the primary outcomes of mycological research have been published in research papers, conference proceedings, and students’ theses. However, all of them were finally summarized in the Chronicles of Nature of the Slobozhanskyi National Park – a yearly updated report on inventory and monitoring programs. Many specimens collected in the territory are deposited in the Mycological herbarium of the V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (CWU(Myc)), digitized with PlutoF data management system and already available on GBIF. Although most mycological research gravitated to the territory of the National Park, occasional observations of fungi and fungi-like protists from unprotected parts of the Krasnokutsk hromada also exist, primarily accessible via citizen science platform iNaturalist. During 2012-2013, mycological research was a part of Park’s inventory and monitoring program, and its results were stored in the internal database.

So the sources for the current dataset, in order of decreasing credibility, are research papers, Chronicles of Nature of the Park, conference proceedings, collection specimens from CWU(Myc), Slobozhanskyi NPP internal database, PhD and Master theses, citizen science observations.

This dataset contains 428 occurrences of 223 vascular plant taxa recorded on September 8, 2024 in five different natural areas on the territory of Studenyky rural territorial community (Central Ukraine). Expedition and field research organized by Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group (UNCG). The locations sampled represent diverse types of natural ecosystems, including three areas of complex grasslands with different moisture conditions (from dry psammophytic steppes to wet wetlands) with separate water bodies, shrub and willow forests, one natural oak forest, and one artificial pine forest. In order to ensure the continued biological diversity of these areas, it is intended that the territory of the Studenykivskyi Regional Landscape Park (RLP) will be expanded. The nomenclature of the dataset follows POWO (POWO, 2024).

A brief overview of the resource that is being documented a short-term expedition to the Regional Landscape Park "Tylihulski" . As of today, the total area of the park is over 8 thousand hectares (8195.4 ha), with approximately 4755.3 ha occupied by the waters of the estuary (Kolomiyets, 2004). Overall, the regional landscape park "Tylihulski" was created with the purpose of preserving and rational use of the coastline of the Tiligulsky estuary and its adjacent waters, as the park's territory encompasses areas rich in flora and fauna, serving as a valuable habitat for waterfowl. In the estuarine waters, which are part of the wetland area "Tylihulski" over 200 bird species have been documented, including representatives listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. Among them are species such as Platalea leucorodia, Aythya nyroca, Himantopus himantopus, Haematopus ostralegus, and others. The floristic complexes on the territory include over 400 plant species, many of which are rare or endangered and listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. These include the snowdrop Galanthus elwesii, Stipa ucrainica, Stipa pulcherrima, Stipa asperella, Stipa lessingiana, Tulipa schrenkii, Tulipa hypanica (Kolomiyets, 2004; Regional report... Mykolaiv Regional State Administration 2022). The studied territory of the regional landscape park "Tylihulski" is located in the southwestern part of the Mykolaiv region on the eastern coast of the Tylihul estuary (in its lower part) and its waters on the border with the Odesa region (46.635250, 31.208700) within the Koblivska territorial community. The length of the territory from north to south ranges from 1.7 to 2 km, and from west to east is approximately 1.8 km. This dataset contains 131 occurrences of 119 species of vascular plants. The nomenclature of the dataset follows “Nomenclatural Checklist of vascular plants of Ukraine” (Mosyakin & Fedoronchuk 1999), with minor edditing the Plants of the World Online with minor edditing GBIF Backbone Taxonomy and GBIF species matching tool and minor taxonomic corrections.

The data presented here pertain to algae, specifically cyanobacteria (Cyanoprokaryota) and euglenoids (Euglenozoa), from the territory of the Slobozhanskyi National Nature Park. These data were collected during research conducted between 2013 and 2015. There is limited existing literature on algae in this area prior to the establishment of the park, and it does not include species lists. Therefore, this literature was not taken into account when creating the descriptions.

One of the most notable ecosystems in the area comprises acidophilous fens found in depressions within pine forests. In historical terms, these depressions were once occupied by lakes on the river terraces. However, today, the majority of them have transformed into fens, reeds, marshes, or shallow lakes situated on the southern banks. These areas are typically characterized by the presence of Betula pubescens, Populus tremula, Alnus glutinosa, and sometimes feature Sphagnum mosses.

A few depressions near Krasnokutsk still retain the characteristics of true peat bogs. They exhibit well-developed Sphagnum floating mats, open water surfaces, and a suppressed growth of pine and birch woods. These unique habitats, particularly unusual for a semi-arid region, have garnered the attention of biologists. In an effort to conserve them, the National Nature Park "Slobozhanskyi" was established in the year 2009.

The primary results of the algological research have been compiled in the "Chronicles of Nature of the Slobozhanskyi National Nature Park," an annually updated report on inventory and monitoring programs. These findings have also been published in abstracts and are stored in the park's internal database. The collection of algal samples gathered within the park's territory is preserved in the algal collection of the Herbarium of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University (CWU). Therefore, the sources for the current dataset include the collection samples from CWU, the "Chronicles of Nature of the Slobozhanskyi National Nature Park," and the internal database.

The dataset include information about flora of 3 redoubts in Mykolaiv region. To the south of the center of Mykolaiv, on the right bank of the Bug Estuary locates three old redoubts with a total area of 12.11 hectares. The fortification system of the Mykolaiv region, consisting of ancient reduts, was created during the Crimean War to solve the problem of city defense. One of the best architects of the time, the famous engineer Eduard Totleben, was responsible for their construction (Waiting for War, 2022). The steppe terrain of the Mykolaiv region served as the site for the creation of defensive structures, and in order to keep the soil in place, the surface of the fortifications was covered with steppe turf at that time. This technique allowed builders to create more stable and durable structures, preventing them from weathering and washing away during precipitation and strong winds. In addition, separate ammunition storage areas were built at each such defense structure, so there was always a sufficient number of guns, a powder magazine, barracks, and everything necessary for people's life inside. The construction of the fortifications dates back to 1853-1856. Mykolaiv reduts are objects of cultural heritage of Ukraine. These structures are of great historical importance and attract not only tourists but also researchers of various fields. The total list of flora include 152 species. The projected botanical nature monument of local importance "Reduty" (“Redoubts” in English) has a high sozological value of vegetation and biotopes. In particular, two Red Data Book species have been identified, Stipa capillata and Stipa lessingiana. On the territory of the redoubts, there is a community of the Stipeta capillatae formation, which is included in the Green Book of Ukraine. There is also a rare habitat of steppes: biotope included in Resolution 4 of the Bern Convention (E1.2 Perennial herbaceous calcite communities and steppes) and included in the European Red List of Habitats (E1.2b Dry continental steppes). The nomenclature of the dataset follows “Nomenclatural Checklist of vascular plants of Ukraine” (Mosyakin & Fedoronchuk 1999) with minor edits.

The copepod Boeckella poppei (Mrazek, 1901) (Calanoida: Centropagidae) is one of the Maritime Antarctic’s most common freshwater zooplankton species. It was first reported from the Antarctic in 1961–1962 on Signy Island (South Orkney Islands). Although the in situ refugia hypothesis suggests that this species survived in regional refuges throughout multiple Pleistocene glacial cycles. Since then, its presence has been confirmed from many locations in the Maritime Antarctic. The species is also present on sub-Antarctic South Georgia and in lakes around the Prince Charles Mountains in Continental Antarctica, and in southern South America. However, in the central part of the western Antarctic Peninsula, specifically in the Wilhelm Archipelago, there have to date been only a few disjointed records of the species and its distribution here has not been documented in any detail beyond being noted as numerous both north and south of the Ukrainian Antarctic Akademik Vernadsky station. Here, we report B. poppei in 51 samples obtained from 23 lakes on eight islands in the Wilhelm Archipelago. Living specimens were observed both in the ice-free summer season and well after the formation of surface ice on water bodies. Adult specimens were present in all samples, while the copepodid stages were only rarely observed and nauplii were not encountered.

V. –The analyzes the structure of diploid and polyploid populations within the spined loach group (Сobitis elongatoides – taenia – tanaitica) in the water systems of Western and Central Ukraine (Danube, Dniester, Southern Bug, Vistula, Middle and Upper Dnipro river basins). It reveals a bipolarity in settlement structure, characterized by a sharp prevalence of either diploids or polyploids, with no geographical trends in spatial distribution. Clonal hybrid polyploids, constituting 70% of the studied region's individuals, predominate in settlements along the main river channels, as well as in the middle and lower reaches of first and second-order tributaries. Populations where individuals of the parent species dominate are situated on the periphery: in accessory systems, tributaries of the third and higher orders, upper reaches of first and second-order tributaries, and lakes. This spatial segregation arises from historical circumstances rather than ecological preferences, primarily due to the distance from water corridors through which polyploids invaded in the 1960s-1970s. The displacement of diploid individuals of parent species by clonal hybrid polyploids is described as a universal phenomenon, linked to the advantages of parthenogenetic reproduction and higher survival rates of polyploids in modern ecological conditions.

This dataset comprises 111 occurrences of 111 species of vascular plants. The projected park, which serves as a monument of landscape architecture, holds significant zoological value. Within its boundaries, we have identified five species of protected vascular plants, among which four are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine (Allium savranicum, Alyssum savranicum, Stipa borysthenica, Ornithogalum boucheanum), and one species is listed in the Red List of Mykolaiv region (Jurinea paczoskiana). Considering the significance of the "Park of the Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory" area for preserving phytodiversity, we propose the creation of a a monument of landscape architecture in this location. The Mykolayiv Astronomical Observatory is a cultural property of national level, the oldest naval observatory in south-eastern Europe. It was founded in 1821 by the Commander-in-chief of the Black Sea Fleet Admiral O.S. Greyg. The Observatory was built to the design of the Chief Architect of the Black Sea Admiralty F.I.Wunsch. Its ensemble consists of the Main Observatory Building built in the style of Classicism in 182 1-1 829, astronomic pavilions of the early 20-th c. where historic astronomic instruments and other museum exhibits are kept. There are also three modem pavilions with working telescopes used for research and observations, outbuildings and service premises for scientific laboratories and management functions and needs, housing of 4 buildings, as well as historic and cultural park landscape. The total area of the ensemble is 7,l hectares including 2,l hectares of built-up area. Mykolaiv Observatory is one of the oldest observatories in Eastern Europe. It was founded in 1821 as a Naval Observatory. In 1912, it became Nikolaev department of the Main (Pulkovo) Astronomical Observatory (MAO). In 1935, it was included in the network of scientific institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR as Nikolaev department of MAO. In 1992, the observatory became an independent research institution in Ukraine, and it has become the Research Institute "Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory" (RI "MAO") since 2002. At present the RI "MAO" is subordinated to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The Observatory is located in the central part of Mykolaiv at an altitude of 52m above sea level. The geographic coordinates are longitude 31o58' E, and latitude 46o58' N. Mykolaiv observatory was included in the Tentative list of UNESCO of the World Heritage Sites from Ukraine (Tentative list № 5116, Tentative list № 5267).

A core part of the national legislation of Ukraine for the protection of rare and threatened species of animals, plants, and fungi is the Red Data Book of Ukraine (RDB). RDB is governed by the corresponding Law and issued once a decade as a scientific edition (Vol. 1 — Animals, Vol. 2 — Plants, Fungi, and Algae). Species listed in the RDB of Ukraine and in the international conservation agreements valid in the territory of Ukraine, such as IUCN Red List or Appendices of Bern Convention, might partly overlap.

Although the RDB of Ukraine, as an edition, was issued for the last time back in 2009 y., in 2021, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine issued two Orders establishing lists of animal, plant, fungal, and algae species that must be included into the next edition of the RDB of Ukraine. Since then, mentioned species have acquired legal conservation statuses throughout all the territory of Ukraine and are considered protected according to the Law of the Red Data Book of Ukraine. Here we present the list of animal species approved to be included in the Red Data Book of Ukraine by Order of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine № 29 as of 19 January 2021.

The studied region is located at the south-eastern border of a crested tit range with several isolated localities were previously known from published sources. This work was intended to understand the details of the species distribution in the region. Between 2014 and 2019, 258 point counts were done in pine (Pinus sylvestris) forests on sand river terraces using a playback point count technique. The dataset includes both positive and negative registrations. New occupied areas had been found, expanding the range of this species further to the south-east.
