Description

The dataset presents a checklist of vascular plants from the Askania steppe (the core of the Falz-Fein Biosphere Reserve "Askania Nova", Kherson Region, Ukraine). It was compiled based on the original author's surveys conducted within 2003–2021. The dataset includes critical analysis, generalisation, and nomenclatural-taxonomic revision of previous floristic studies of the Askania steppe from the 19th–20th centuries, as well as local herbarium collections.

Data Records

The data in this checklist resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 527 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods

The re-inventory of vascular plant flora was conducted using traditional expedition-route methods, with location recording in the existing grid system and GPS navigation. Surveys were planned considering the ecological niche, habitat specificity, and phenology of the species. Results were aligned with historical floristic surveys (e.g., Teetzmann, 1845; Pachosky, 1923; Korotkova, 1964; Vedenkov, Vodopyanova, 1974; Vedenkov, 1989; Elonova, 1990) and regional herbarium collections (ASCN, KW, KHER, KHEM). Species names follow the checklist by Mosyakin & Fedoronchuk (1999) and Plants of the World Online (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew).

Study Extent Natural core of "Askania Nova" Reserve, southern Ukraine.

Method step description:

  1. Exploratory surveys of the territory.
  2. Routes studies of various reserve sections.
  3. Plant specimens sampling and identification.
  4. Revision of herbarium collections and historical floristic records.
  5. Generalisation, nomenclatural-taxonomic analysis, and compilation of the flora synopsis.
