Description

The dataste contains data on 46839 records of 342 species, including 337 species of vascular plants, 2 species of bryophytes (Astomum crispum (Hedw.) Hampe and Bryum sp.) and 3 species of lichens (Cladonia fimbriata (L.) Fr., Cladonia rangiformis Hoffm. and Xanthoparmelia camtschadalis (Ach.) Hale). These findings relate to 1882 relevés sampled on the territory of the natural core (protected area) of the Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve, as well as preserved virgin lands in the Reserve's region for the period 1967-2019. At the same time, 874 relevés were made by Shapoval V., 325 relevés by O. Hoffman, 681 relevés by Drohobych N. and Shestakova (Bachkovska), N. and 2 descriptions by N. Dotsenko.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1,882 records.

2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

A significant part of the inventories was made in the depressions (Ahaimansky, Domuzlynsky, Barnashivsky, Maly Chapelsky, Zeleny, Chorna Dolyna, etc.) during their floods in 2003 and 2010 and dry periods. The vast majority of the Rrelevés had a standard area of 100 m2 (10×10 m), with some relevés limited to an area of 9 to 16 m2 (3×3 and 4×4 m). For each plot, several environmental and structural parameters were recorded: cover of vegetation layers and of litter. The localisation of relevés for the period 2003-2019 was determined using Lowrance iFinder and Garmin eTrex 20x GPS navigators. The coordinates of the archival Relevés are given approximately, according to the original characteristics of their location in the context of the quarterly network. Some specimens of the vascular plants and almost all lichens and mosses were collected as herbarium for determination and verification after the fieldwork. After digitizing the data, we harmonised the taxonomic information according to the nomenclature sources: for vascular plants - (POWO 2024). Then we used GBIF Backbone Taxonomy (GBIF species matching tool: https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup) for the taxonomic check and implemented minor corrections of species names regarding misprints and problematic taxa to avoid misinterpretation. We additionally checked and verified the header data of vegetation plots (Event Core and GBIF Relevé Extension, Occurrence Extension) using OpenRefine (https://openrefine.org/), and QGIS 3.22 (https://qgis.org) for quality control.

Study Extent Relevés according to the classical methodology on permanent trial plots of the ecological range of the protected area of the Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve, on restored perennial fallow land, during mapping and monitoring surveys under the Chronicle of Nature program.
Quality Control The authors are responsible for the quality of the data provided in the dataset.

Method step description:

  1. Site selection, field research.
  2. Identification of herbarium specimens of vascular plants, lichens, bryophytes.
  3. Digitizing the field data forms and sources.
  4. Data checking and cleaning.
  5. Transformation of the dataset according to the Darwin Core standards.
  6. Taxonomic check, final quality control.
