Description

The outstanding zoologist and conservationist of the 20th century Mykola Vasyliovych Charlemagne (1887-1979) was the first to pay attention to beavers' protection in Ukraine. He advocated the ban on hunting beavers, the collecting of cadastre of their settlements, and the creation of nature conservation areas of local importance. He published the first articles indicating the locations of beaver detections in 1913 based on the information of other researchers and hunters in 1918. beavers have been seen in the last 15 years. At the state level, the registration of beavers' habitats was brought to the state level already at the beginning of Ukraine's independence, as part of the work of the Government. Starting from 1918, questionnaires for registering beaver finds were sent to all forest farms and published in magazines for hunters and fishermen. M. V. Charlemagne sent out questionnaires about the spread of C. fiber until the 1930s. The central work of M. Charlemagne on the protection of beavers was the article "On the modern distribution of the beaver (Castor fiber L.) in Ukraine and on its protection measures", published in 1927. The article contains descriptions of about 50 settlements on the territory of Ukraine. M. Charlemagne considered the existing methods of beavers' protection ineffective and proposed to "immediately establish beaver sanctuaries in all places where beavers are still found, regardless of their number, with a ban on hunting for 10 years. The sanctuaries should be exempted from any economic use". Referring to the existing beaver reserves in the USSR and Belarus, he suggested creating a "large beaver reserve" in Ukraine, with an area of 15,000 hectares in the Zhytomyr region. In addition to the mentioned one M.V. Charlemagne supported the idea of creating other protected areas. Only 55 years later, by Decision No. 28 of the Zhytomyr Regional Executive Committee dated January 21, 1982, the "Black Moss", "Shchabel", "Volosne", "Sukachove" and "Barvenkovo" nature reserves with a total area of 627.9 hectares were established in the Ushomyr Forestry.

Méthodes d'échantillonnage

Data was obtained from published observations of several literature resources made by the M. Charlemagne. The coordinates were defined by description using Google Earth Pro program (v. 7.3.6.9326).
