Description
The studied region is located at the south-eastern border of a crested tit range with several isolated localities were previously known from published sources. This work was intended to understand the details of the species distribution in the region. Between 2014 and 2019, 258 point counts were done in pine (Pinus sylvestris) forests on sand river terraces using a playback point count technique. The dataset includes both positive and negative registrations. New occupied areas had been found, expanding the range of this species further to the south-east.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 258 records.
1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods
Field studies were made between 2014 and 2019. Playback point count method was used: 258 points were visited during the pre-breeding and early breeding season (mid-February–mid-April) when calling activity of birds was highest. The total time of adult calls playbacks and passive listening in each point was 10 minutes. Birds responded from within 100 meters around count point. Each ‘event’ represents one point count. Presence or absence of responding birds is shown in field ‘occurrenceStatus’ and the number of responding birds is shown in fields ‘organismQuantity’. Pine stand origin for each count point (natural or planted) is given in the field ‘fieldNotes’.
Study Extent | Sampling was made in Kharkiv region, Ukraine, in a transition between East European forest-steppe and Pontic steppe ecoregions (Olson et al., 2001). Previously, crested tit was known only from several localities in pine-dominated forests located on sand river terraces in the central part of the region (Somov, 1897; Volchanetsky, 1954; Vergeles, 1994; Vergeles et al., 1994). Current study covered similar habitats in a wider area to uncover the details of its distribution here, from north-western (closer to the main range) to south-eastern part of the region. |
