Description

This dataset contains occurrence records of herbaceous plant species identified within the urban park vegetation of the Dnipro Botanical Garden (Ukraine) in 2022. The data were collected as part of a floristic survey aimed at characterizing the structure and composition of the herb layer across multiple park sites representing different management regimes. Species composition was recorded in 4×4 m quadrats across tree, shrub, and herbaceous layers, with a focus on the herbaceous stratum. The dataset contributes to understanding biodiversity patterns and urban vegetation structure in Eastern European urban landscapes.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1,739 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Geographic Coverage

The dataset covers the herbaceous vegetation of the urban parkland within the territory of the Dnipro Botanical Garden (Ukraine), located in the central part of the city of Dnipro. The sampling area includes a mosaic of managed and semi-natural park plots characterized by tree, shrub, and herbaceous layers. Geographic coordinates span from 48.430142 to 48.433630 N latitude and from 35.037564 to 35.042767 E longitude.

Bounding Coordinates South West [48.43, 35.038], North East [48.434, 35.043]

Taxonomic Coverage

The dataset includes herbaceous plant species belonging to various families of vascular plants recorded in the urban park environment of the Dnipro Botanical Garden. Taxa were identified at the species level, and the dataset covers representatives of dominant and subdominant species in the herbaceous layer. The majority of species belong to the phylum Tracheophyta (vascular plants), spanning multiple classes and families typical of urban parkland flora in the forest-steppe zone of Eastern Europe.

Class Liliopsida, Magnoliopsida, Polypodiopsida

Sampling Methods

Vegetation sampling was conducted using a standardized quadrat method. In total, 20 quadrats measuring 4×4 meters were established throughout the Dnipro Botanical Garden to represent the diversity of herbaceous vegetation within urban park habitats. All vascular plant species present within each quadrat were recorded. The sampling aimed to capture variation in floristic composition related to differences in management intensity, microrelief, light availability, and soil conditions. Taxonomic identification was conducted in the field and verified with regional floras when necessary.

Study Extent The study was conducted in 2022 within the territory of the Dnipro Botanical Garden (Ukraine), covering the herbaceous layer vegetation across different urban park zones. A total of 20 sampling plots (4×4 m quadrats) were established across various habitat types representative of the site's spatial heterogeneity. The plots were selected to encompass a gradient of environmental and anthropogenic influences, including differences in shading, soil conditions, and proximity to pathways and infrastructure. The survey focused on recording the presence of vascular plant species in the herbaceous layer.

Method step description:

  1. The collected field data were first entered into spreadsheets, with taxonomic names standardized according to current nomenclature using GBIF Backbone Taxonomy. Coordinates were verified using GPS data collected in the field and corrected for accuracy. The dataset was transformed into Darwin Core format, including fields such as eventDate, decimalLatitude, decimalLongitude, scientificName, occurrenceStatus, and basisOfRecord. Each occurrence record was assigned a unique occurrenceID. The final dataset was validated using GBIF’s data quality tools before publication.
