Description

The dataset represents data from the labels of part of the identified and organized collection of insects of the State Museum of Nature of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 2,020 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data

“Saving Biodiversity Data in Wartime” project aims to contribute to the protection and conservation of biological diversity in Ukraine during and after the war, by collecting, digitalizing and publishing the primary biodiversity data held by Ukrainian scientists and environmentalists in war-affected territories. The project is implemented by Oleksii Marushchak, 2023 Eastern Partnership Civil Society Fellow.

Sampling Methods

When creating the dataset, data from the labels of the defined and organized collection of beetles of the Museum of Nature of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University were used. Both own collections and collections of colleagues and old material from the museum collection were used. The material was determined by the author personally, for the reliable identification of some species, individual specimens (mainly males) were prepared for the use of signs of the genital apparatus. The coordinates of the majority were set by me using the Google Maps service, some specimens had coordinates on labels that were indicated by collectors. The dates of the material collected before January 31, 1918 are provided without changes. All material in dry form is mounted on entomological pins either directly or glued to a cardboard die. Prepared genitalia are stored in glycerol in a microtube and pricked on a pin under the corresponding beetle.

Study Extent The dataset represents records of representatives of 7 families of Coleoptera order from 23 regions of Ukraine made within the period from 1827 to 2017. The material on the basis of which the dataset was created is stored in the collection of the Museum of Nature of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University: KUMN http://hbs.bishopmuseum.org/codens/.
Quality Control Correct species identification is guaranteed by sufficient experience of working with the given insect groups (more than 30 years), thorough and accurate mounting of specimens, use for reliable identification of certain types of signs of the genital apparatus. The material is defined using all the most recent definitions and publications available. The author is one of the authoritative specialists in these groups.

Method step description:

  1. 1. Own collecting of material in the wild, determination of coordinates (georeferencing).
  2. 2. Mounting of own and transferred material and, if necessary, preparation of specimens.
  3. 3. Identification of the material using all available identifiers and publications.
  4. 4. Labeling and identification of the coordinates of the transferred material.
  5. 5. Creation of dataset for GBIF according to the Darwin Core standards.
