Description

The dataset represents records of plants, fungi and animals made by the author during his field trips in 2023-2024 conducted mainly on the territory of Left-Bank Ukraine. The dataset is enriched with records from Chernivtsi region as well as with 61 registration poits recorded by the author in the 2020-2022 period. Besides the dataset is relatively small (consisting of only 885 records) it represents finds of biodiversity on the territory of those regions of Ukraine, that experienced the military occupation in the beginning of 2022 during full-scale aggression from Russian side. This data can be used for assessing of the impact of war and its consequences on the native biota of Ukraine.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 918 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data

“Saving Biodiversity Data in Wartime” project aims to contribute to the protection and conservation of biological diversity in Ukraine during and after the war, by collecting, digitalizing and publishing the primary biodiversity data held by Ukrainian scientists and environmentalists in war-affected territories. The project is implemented by Oleksii Marushchak, 2023 Eastern Partnership Civil Society Fellow.

Sampling Methods

Species were identified visually, audially, by remnants of the body or other signs of the species presence in certain place. All identification, recording and georeferencing sessions were made by professional zoologists. In perticular cases the organisms were identified with the help of specific specialists that work with certain group of living organisms. Therefore, the author expresses his gratitude to the following scientists for their help: Oleksandr Drogvalenko, Heorhii Bondarenko, Nina Polchaninova, Oksana Markovs'ka, Vitalii Kazannyk, Nazar Smirnov, Oleksandr Akulov, Hennadii Honcharov, Olena Miskova.

Study Extent The dataset represents records of representatives of Animalia, Plantae and Fungi kingdoms made by the author on the territory of Kharkiv, Sumy, Kyiv, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk and Chernivtsi administrative regions of Ukraine in the period from 2020 to the very beginning of 2024.
Quality Control The author is fully responsible for the quality of data provided within the dataset.

Method step description:

  1. Visual registration of an animal/plant/fungus with subsequent identification.
  2. Georeferencing.
  3. Organizing of a dataset according to Darwin Core standards.
