Description
The dataset includes 409 occurrences of 189 plant species from the "Novobila" local reserve and chalk outcrops near the Sharivka village, Luhansk Region, Ukraine. The nomenclature of the dataset follows “Vascular Plants of Ukraine. A Nomenclatural Checklist” - ((Mosyakin & Fedoronchuk 1999) with minor edits.
Data Records
The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 17 records.
2 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Geographic Coverage
The research area is located on the southern slopes of the Central Russian Upland, in the north of the steppe zone. The local botanical reserve "Novobila" is situated on the right bank of the Bilenka River, a left tributary of the Aydar River. The chalk outcrops near the Sharivka village are located on the right bank of the Aydar River, in the upper part of its basin.

Sampling Methods
We carried out 17 releves on chalk outcrops and chalk steppe areas. We also compiled a list of species common to slopes of different aspect. The distribution of the species points was recorded using Garmin eTrex Vista HCx GPS navigator. As a result, a list of vascular plant species was compiled for the first time for these sites. We proposed the creation of a botanical reserve of local importance near the village of Sharivka (Borovyk, Sova, 2015).
Study Extent | We carried out 17 releves on chalk outcrops and chalk steppe areas. We also compiled a list of species common to slopes of different aspect. |

Quality Control | After digitizing the data, we harmonised the taxonomic information according to the nomenclature sources: for vascular plants ““Vascular Plants of Ukraine. A Nomenclatural Checklist” - (Mosyakin & Fedoronchuk 1999) . Then we used GBIF Backbone Taxonomy (GBIF species matching tool: https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup) for the taxonomic check and implemented minor corrections of species names regarding misprints and problematic taxa to avoid misinterpretation. We additionally checked and verified the header data of vegetation plots (Event Core and GBIF Relevé Extension, Occurrence Extension) using OpenRefine (https://openrefine.org/) and QGIS 3.38 (https://qgis.org) for quality control. |
Method step description:
- Field work: recording the distribution points of the species; carrying out the releves
- Compilation of a list of vascular plant species
- Data checking and cleaning.
- Transformation of the dataset according to the Darwin Core standards.
- Taxonomic check, final quality control.
