Description
The dataset contains data on the registration of 225 bird species in the North-Western Azov region within Zaporizhzhia and Kherson administrative regions of Ukraine. Counts were carried out mainly on the Bolgradsky Syvashyk, Utlyutskyi, Molochnyi, Tubalskyi estuaries; spits and bays of the Azov Sea - Obytochna spit and bay, Berdyansk spit and bay, as well as at the mouths of small rivers flowing into these reservoirs. All estuaries have been to some extent transformed by anthropogenic pressure. The research area covers (in whole or in part) 3 Ramsar wetlands: “Molochnyi Estuary”, “Obitochnaya Bay and Spit”, “Berdyansk Bay and Spit and Estuary Zone of the Berda River”. Since 2009, the Azov National Park was created on the territory of the study area, but during this period either reserves were located here, or the territory did not have a protected status.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 8,619 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods
Bird counts were carried out using 10-12x binoculars on walking or driving routes along the shores of the studied water bodies. Birds were counted from vantage points that were selected to include all birds in the wetland and avoid duplication of data. All birds were counted regardless of whether they were on the reservoir or adjacent land. In some cases, a 30x optical tube was used. During the nesting period, nests and broods were also taken into account. On the Molochnyi Estuary, if necessary, surveys from boats were also used. During the surveys, all birds were assigned to a specific control area of arbitrary shape, the boundaries of which were determined by natural landmarks. The coordinates for bird registration are the coordinates of the center of such a site, which were determined using the QGIS program. The accuracy of coordinate estimation was determined as the maximum distance from the center to the boundary of the site.
Study Extent | Research was carried out during regular field expeditions of employees of the Azov-Black Sea Ornithological Station to the wetlands of the North-Western Azov region in all seasons of the year in the North-Western Azov region within Zaporizhzhia and Kherson administrative regions of Ukraine. |
