Description

The dataset is made of collected records of nationally, regionally and internationally protected species, common wildlife species of Ukraine and invasive species (like red-eared slider, Trachemys scripta). The dataset also contains numerous records of invasive plant species. Some of the records can contribute to the understanding of the ntural ranges of some species.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 2,229 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data

“Saving Biodiversity Data in Wartime” project aims to contribute to the protection and conservation of biological diversity in Ukraine during and after the war, by collecting, digitalizing and publishing the primary biodiversity data held by Ukrainian scientists and environmentalists in war-affected territories. The project is implemented by Oleksii Marushchak, 2023 Eastern Partnership Civil Society Fellow.

Sampling Methods

The materials published in the dataset were compiled as a result of the analysis of data from expeditions and observations conducted during 2016-2023. Most of the data published are from field scientific and conservation expeditions, during which biodiversity was photographed and georeferenced, and most routes were recorded using the Nextgis Mobile and QFields mobile applications. Part of the material was also collected for further cameral processing: dry and liquid-fixed arthropod collections, herbariums, and bird feathers, found during the field trips and identified later with the help of relevant literature and invited experts.

Study Extent The dataset consists of records of plants, animals and fungi from Zakarpattia, Lviv, Rivne, Zhytomyr, Kyiv, Chernihiv, Poltava, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Khmel'nytskyi and Odes administrative regions of Ukraine made during field trips in the period from 2016 to 2023.
Quality Control The quthor is responsible for the quality of data provided in the dataset. In particular cases, external experts on separate gtoups of biodiversity (ornithologists, lichenologists, botanists, bryologists, entomologists etc.) were invited to help with the identification of the records to the level of species/subspecies.

Method step description:

  1. Field expeditions and observations with photographic recording of biota and geotagging of findings and routes.
  2. Cameral data processing: identification of biota species using photographs, identification of fixed collected organisms using a stereomicroscope. If necessary, engaging experts in certain groups of wildlife.
  3. Geodata processing using the QGis geographic information system. Compilation data into a dataset.
  4. Organizing of the dataset according to Darwin Core standards.
