Description

The database contains data on insects, some Lepidoptera families (superfamily Pyraloidea mainly) registered on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Mykhaylivsʹka Tsilyna”. The materials were partially included in the first three volumes of the Annals of Nature of the Reserve. The database contains data on the findings of 173 butterflies species.

Sampling Methods

The main method of collection is a light trap. With the onset of dusk 2 arc-mercury lamps of 250 W were turned on, fixed at a height of 2-2.5 m from the ground surface against white screens. Catching butterflies continued until dawn. Insects were mounted on entomological needles or placed in mattresses for further identification. Some species that are easy to identify were recorded without catching. Butterflies were collected by hand in places where they stay during the day (vegetation, trunks and stumps, fences, walls of buildings, etc.). With this method, some species were found that did not fly to the light, and it was also possible to collect material where it was impossible to use the lamps. Species were identified by external morphological features.

Study Extent It is located within the boundaries of Sumy region, in the west of Lebedyn district near Velyki Luky village (Katerynivska village council) to the northwest of Stepove village and partly within the boundaries of Vilshany territorial community in the basin of Sula river. The total area of the Reserve is 882.9 hectares of state-owned land. I would like to express my gratitude to the head of the Ukrainian Steppe Reserve branch M.G. Piddubyna and the community of Velyki Luky village for the assistance of conducting research.
