Description

A small river, Topirets flows in the Buchansky district of the Kyiv oblast (Ukraine). The length of this river is 13 kilometers. Several streams flow into Topirets river. Starting from Nemishaieve to the mouth, the river bed is an almost continuous cascade of ponds. In 2024, we collected data on aquatic vascular plants that grew there. Also, this list includes some plants that grew on swamps. Our dataset contains 80 occurrences of 16 species.

These data were partially used for the preparation of two conference papers (Olshanskyi et al., 2024; Olshanskyi & Lisovskyi, 2024).

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 80 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods

We herbarized some plants. Then we handed over the collected specimens to the National Herbarium of Ukraine (KW). For each species, we noted its abundance using a five-point scale: 1 – rare, 2 – occasional, 3 – frequent, 4 – common, 5 – abundant.

Study Extent We studied the distribution of aquatic plants in the small Topirets river during 2024. We also studied the plants that grow in the tributary streams of this river.
Quality Control Some specimens of the vascular plants were collected as herbarium for determination and verification after the fieldwork. After digitizing the data, we harmonised the taxonomic information according to GBIF Backbone Taxonomy (GBIF species matching tool: https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup) for the taxonomic check and to avoid misinterpretation.

Method step description:

  1. Site selection, field research.
  2. Identification of herbarium specimens of vascular plants.
  3. Digitization of field data.
  4. Data validation and cleaning.
  5. Data set transformation according to Darwin Core standards.
  6. Taxonomic validation, final quality control.
