Description
During 1999-2011 in Kherson were published Scientific Readings. This Scientific readings initiated and organised by Kherson State University. It was established to devote to the issues of environmental ecology, human, plant, animal ecology, ecological culture and environmental education. Problems of biodiversity conservation and development in Ukraine and Europe are discussed. The Scientific readings is regional and contains materials mainly by specialists from scientific and educational institutions of the Kherson Region. All articles are recommended to be published by the decisions of the Kherson State University. The conference is held in the spring in odd-numbered years (1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009) etc. The data set contain information of 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2011 scientific articles. The Scientific readings is not publicized in any digital library of scientific literature and as of 2024 it is not available in any digital library of scientific literature. Nonetheless, the publication contains important scientific information about the occurrences of animal and plant species, including unique records of endemic and protected species of southern Ukraine. The articles of this proceeding highlight the problems of environmental ecology, human, plant, animal ecology, ecological culture and environmental education. The dataset contains an comprehensive records of all species occurrences that have been published in scientific readings “Faltzfein readings” The nomenclature of the dataset follows original taxa names. The materials in Scientific readings are especially important in light of the events of 2022, when a Russian full scale invasion. The data from these Scientific readings actually document the historical state of biodiversity before the outbreak of a full-scale invasion war in the southern Ukraine.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 7,345 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods
The dataset was created after excluding data from already published literature resources. This dataset was prepared (correctly organized according to Darwin Core standards) and published with the help of the project "Preservation of data on biodiversity of Ukraine during the Russian occupation" funded by "Documenting Ukraine" initiative. The initiative is financed by the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna (https://www.iwm.at/). All information of the registration points was excluded from the following publications.
Study Extent | The study area is situated in the Ukraine and other countries as Moldova, Republic of Belarus, Russian Federation and Uzbekistan. |

Quality Control | The authors of publications are fully responsible for the quality of data provided within the dataset. We used GBIF Backbone Taxonomy (GBIF species matching tool: https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup) for the taxonomic check and implemented minor corrections of species names regarding misprints and problematic taxa to avoid misinterpretation. The data were first checked and verified manually using MS Excel and then additionally cross-checked in the OpenRefine environment. GBIF data validator has been applied to final check the dataset before uploading. We additionally checked and verified the header data and QGIS 3.22 (https://qgis.org) for quality control. |
