Description

This dataset contains 428 occurrences of 223 vascular plant taxa recorded on September 8, 2024 in five different natural areas on the territory of Studenyky rural territorial community (Central Ukraine). Expedition and field research organized by Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group (UNCG). The locations sampled represent diverse types of natural ecosystems, including three areas of complex grasslands with different moisture conditions (from dry psammophytic steppes to wet wetlands) with separate water bodies, shrub and willow forests, one natural oak forest, and one artificial pine forest. In order to ensure the continued biological diversity of these areas, it is intended that the territory of the Studenykivskyi Regional Landscape Park (RLP) will be expanded. The nomenclature of the dataset follows POWO (POWO, 2024).

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 428 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Sampling Methods

This dataset was prepared as part of a study of the territory adjacent to the Studenykіvskyi Regional Landscape Park with a view to expanding it. Out of the 5 sites, one (oak forest) is located directly within the RLP, while the other 4 are in its vicinity. In the vicinity of the park, there are valuable natural ecosystems that need to be preserved: psammophytic steppe areas, meadows, marshes, wet shrubs and wet forests, pine plantations, water bodies, etc. We propose to add them to the reserve. For each site, a list of vascular plant species was compiled using the Vegapp app (S. Schmidtlein, www.vegapp.de). Vegapp is an Android app for collecting vegetation data in sample plots. Particular attention was paid to the distribution of protected species. For each species, the frequency of occurrence was assessed on a five-point scale.

Study Extent The dataset contains the locations of vascular plants recorded during 08.09.2024 in Central Ukraine in the Forest-Steppe zone. The study area is located in the valley of the Trubizh River. This area belongs to the Studenyky rural territorial community of Boryspil District, Kyiv Region.
Quality Control Some specimens of the vascular plants were collected as herbarium for determination and verification after the fieldwork. After digitizing the data, we harmonised the taxonomic information according to the nomenclature sources: for vascular plants - POWO (2024). Then we used GBIF Backbone Taxonomy (GBIF species matching tool: https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup) for the taxonomic check and implemented minor corrections of species names regarding misprints and problematic taxa to avoid misinterpretation. We additionally checked and verified the data using OpenRefine (https://openrefine.org/), and QGIS 3.22 (https://qgis.org) for quality control.

Method step description:

  1. Site selection, field research.
  2. Identification of herbarium specimens of vascular plants.
  3. Digitizing the field data forms.
  4. Data checking and cleaning.
  5. Transformation of the dataset according to the Darwin Core standards.
  6. Taxonomic check, final quality control.
