Description

The dataset includes 2000 records of 143 species of hover flies, collected in 7 regions of Western Ukraine during 2005-2022. According to the IUCN, the presented species have different statuses - Data Deficient (DD), Endangered (EN), Near Threatened (NT), Least Concern (LC). Temnostoma meridionale is included in the Red Book of Ukraine (category: Vulnerable). The overwhelming majority of the finds belong to the Volhynian-Podolian Upland. The collections include data from the territories of protected areas - Malovanka landscape park, Podilski Tovtry, Male Polissia, Skolivski Beskydy national parks, Medobory, Roztochia and Rivnenskyi nature reserves.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 2,000 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

“Saving Biodiversity Data in Wartime” project aims to contribute to the protection and conservation of biological diversity in Ukraine during and after the war, by collecting, digitalizing and publishing the primary biodiversity data held by Ukrainian scientists and environmentalists in war-affected territories. The project is implemented by Oleksii Marushchak, 2023 Eastern Partnership Civil Society Fellow.

Title Saving Biodiversity Data in Wartime
Funding “Saving Biodiversity Data in Wartime” project is funded by the European Union within its Eastern Partnership Civil Society Fellowship Programme.

Sampling Methods

Insects are collected with an entomological net with a hoop diameter of 30 cm. Adults are collected in flight, on flowers and leaves of plants. The collection sites are recorded using a GPS navigator (Garmin eTrex-30) on the ground, and later refined on a PC (using software). All collected individuals are fixed in the field in special containers using a fixative (acetone). In the laboratory, frozen individuals are identified using special identifiers, and the identified individuals are entered into the database. Identification of individuals is carried out using binoculars - Stereoscopic Microscope (MBS-9) and PZO Warszawa (24865). Species that have the status of disputed (in identification) are taken for clarification and discussion to the specialists of the I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology, NAS of Ukraine.

Study Extent The dataset represents 2000 records of flies from Syrphidae family collected from the territory of the Volhynian-Podolian Upland during the period of 2005-2022. Most of the items were recorded from the territory of Podilski Tovtry National Nature Park. Some of the specimens are preserved in several collections among Ukrainian scientific and nature conservation institutions. 1. «Hoverflies of Volhynian-Podolian Upland». 2. Collection without an identifier. 3. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/345312158_Rol_entomologicnih_fondiv_NPP_Podilski_Tovtri_u_navcalno-vihovnomu_procesi_Kam'anec-Podilskogo_nacionalnogo_universitetu_imeni_Ivana_Ogienka. 4. The collection material is prepared for long-term storage. All specimens are mounted on entomological pins and have labels indicating the date and place of collection, scientific name of the specimen, the name of the collector and those who identified them. The collection was organized according to generally accepted methods. The systematic position of species is given according to the nomenclature (Peck, 1988).
Quality Control Consultations and clarification of the identification of individual species were carried out by Grigory Popov, PhD, Department of Entomology and Collection Management, I.I.Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology, and Olexiy V. Prokhorov, PhD, Department of Entomology and Collection Management, I.I.Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology. The collector has 18 years of experience with this group of organisms.
