Description
In 2023, we conducted a study of the biodiversity of the flora of Traian's (Troian’s) earthworks in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi ditstrict, Odesa region. Traian's Wall is the name used for several linear earthen fortifications found across Eastern Europe, Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine ((Sapozhnikov 2011, Zharkikh 2024). The aim of this study was to highlight the importance of flora inventory as a necessary condition for monitoring and preserving phytodiversity. In total, we compiled 4 floristic lists using the Vegapp app, which formed the basis of this dataset during trip in 2024. This dataset contains 282 occurrences of 164 vascular plant species recorded in 4 floristic lists during the project. The nomenclature of the dataset is as follows: “Ukrainian Plant Trait Database: UkrTrait v. 1.0” - (Vynokurov et al. 2024).
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 282 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Design Description | We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the archaeologist Ihor Viktorovych Sapozhnikov, who assisted us in discovering the ancient earhworks. |
Sampling Methods
The study was conducted during 2023. As part of the study, we compiled a list of vascular plant species that are characteristic of a particular habitat. The list of species was generated using the Vegapp software. Each species was assessed by its prevalence on a five-point scale: : I - rare, II - occasional, III - frequent, IV - common, V - abundant. To create this dataset, we collected 4 floristic lists. The choice of study plots was based first on satellite images from Google Earth, and then on direct field research. The field research was focused on specific habitats. Particular attention was paid to identifying protected species.
Study Extent | The dataset contains the co-distribution of vascular plants. The study area is located in the Odesa Region, Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi Ditstrict, Budzhak area, southern part of Ukraine. The earthworks we studied are fragments of the Lower Traian's earthworks. We investigated one fragment of the earthworks near the village of Borysivka. The earthworks is located among fields, it looks like a grassland strip with a road and local artificial plantations. Its vegetation cover is highly synatropic. Also we studied three fragments of the earthworks near the villages of Vesele, Sadove and Semenivka, which stretches along the right bank of the Dnistro estuary, also called the Lower Dnistro (Nyzhnodnistrovsk) earthworks (Sapozhnikov 2011). The earthworks is located on the steppe slope of the terrace of the Dnistro estuary. The steppe vegetation cover is well preserved. Sometimes it is planted with artificial trees. |

Quality Control | Several specimens of vascular plants were collected as herbarium specimens to facilitate identification and verification after field research. After digitizing the data, we harmonised the taxonomic information according to the nomenclature sources "Ukrainian Plant Trait Database: UkrTrait v. 1.0" - (Vynokurov et al. 2024): for vascular plants, we used GBIF Backbone Taxonomy (GBIF species matching tool: https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup) for the taxonomic check and implemented minor corrections of species names regarding mispitem-0rints and problematic taxa to avoid misinterpretation. |
