Description

This dataset is created and maintained by Dr. Andriy Novikov from the State Museum of Natural History of the NAS of Ukraine. This dataset gathers all available data (mostly obtained from the preserved herbarium material) on the distribution of the endemic vascular plants in the Ukrainian Carpathians and adjacent territories. This dataset is created in frames of mapping the distribution of the endemic plants and will be compiled with coordinates and English locality translations during further updates. To avoid data duplication, this dataset does not include the endemic representatives of the genus Aconitum that are part of another dataset (https://doi.org/10.15468/n37j8x) published before.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 6,869 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Project Data

Bratislava Project was launched by Andriy Novikov in 2015 and aimed to map the distribution of endemic plants in the Ukrainian Carpathians. This initial mapping stage should allow a better understanding of the biogeography of endemic plants in the Ukrainian Carpathians to reveal their geoecological preferences and conserve the rare representatives.

Title Bratislava Project
Funding This project is mostly self-funded by Andriy Novikov. However, it was also partly financially supported by Shpyg Foundation and Marcin Skubiszewski Foundation.
Study Area Description Ukrainian Carpthians
Design Description All available data, predominantly gathered from the Ukrainian herbarium collections, but also represented in the publications, card indexes, and other scientific sources, are used for the creation of this dataset.

The personnel involved in the project:

Sampling Methods

The data are extracted mostly from the herbarium labels and research publications. In certain cases, data were also gathered from the card indexes (e.g., Karel Domin's Card Index) and other related scientific sources.

Study Extent All reports and specimens of the endemic vascular plants collected from the Ukrainian Carpathians in 1800-2000th are applied to create this dataset.
Quality Control The taxonomy, in general, corresponds to the POWO checklist but has minor corrections regarding problematic taxa. The quality of data is manually controlled and verified, taking into account the research expertise of Andriy Novikov, and also controlled through automatic procedures (e.g., OpenRefine).

Method step description:

  1. 1. Taking photos of herbarium labels; 2. Reidentification of taxa following recent taxonomy; 3. Extracting the locality, collector, date, and other relevant (e.g., identification history) information from the labels; 4. Translation of the primary label information from non-Romanian languages (i.e., Ukrainian and Russian) to English; 5. Georeferencing and verification of localities using recent and antique maps; 6. Quality check applying OpenRefine and QGIS (for outlets and coordinates mistakes).

Collection Data
