Description

In May 2025, a study was conducted on the biodiversity of the flora near Stavyshche village, Zhytomyr district, Zhytomyr region. The research aimed to find valuable areas for the establishment of new protected areas. The expedition revealed several well-preserved bogs with regionally rare plant species Carex pilosa and Equisetum hyemale, as well as a habitat from Resolution 4 of the Bern Convention - thickets of large sedges, mostly without stagnant water. We also carried out a flora inventory. In total, we compiled 13 floristic lists using the Vegapp app, which formed the basis of this dataset during 1 field trip in 2025. This dataset contains 381 occurrences of 201 species (vascular plants) recorded in 13 releves or vegetation surveys during the project. The nomenclature of the dataset is as follows Ukrainian Plant Trait Database: UkrTrait v. 1.0 (Vynokurov et al. 2024).

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 13 records.

1 extension data tables also exist. An extension record supplies extra information about a core record. The number of records in each extension data table is illustrated below.

Event (core)

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Sampling Methods

The research was conducted throughout May 2025. During the research, a list of vascular plant species for a particular habitat was compiled. The species list was created using the Vegapp app. For each species, its abundance is determined using a five-point scale: I - rare, II - occasional, III - frequent, IV - common, V - abundant. To obtain this dataset, 13 florist lists were collected. The research sites were pre-selected based on satellite images from Google Earth. The next stage of selection was direct field surveys of the territory. The surveys were usually carried out within a particular habitat or group of similar habitats in an area that we considered perspective for a new protected area. Particular attention was paid to the presence of protected species. These data were used to prepare scientific justifications for the creation of new protected areas

Study Extent The dataset contains the co-distribution of vascular plants. The study area is located in the Zhytomyr Region, which is the Northern part of Ukraine, within the Polissya Lowland. The territory includes parts of the Zhytomyr District. This area is located in the southern part of the Forests zone (Polissia), within the Fosa River and Bilka River Basins (Dnipro River basin).
Quality Control Some specimens of the vascular plants were collected as a herbarium for determination and verification after the fieldwork. After digitizing the data, we harmonised the taxonomic information according to the nomenclature sources "Ukrainian Plant Trait Database: UkrTrait v. 1.0" - (Vynokurov et al. 2024): for vascular plants, we used GBIF Backbone Taxonomy (GBIF species matching tool: https://www.gbif.org/tools/species-lookup) for the taxonomic check and implemented minor corrections of species names regarding misprints and problematic taxa to avoid misinterpretation. We additionally checked and verified the header data of vegetation plots (Event Core and GBIF Relevé Extension, Occurrence Extension) using OpenRefine (https://openrefine.org/) and QGIS 3.38 (https://qgis.org) for quality control.

Method step description:

  1. Site selection, field research.
  2. Identification of herbarium specimens of vascular plants.
  3. Digitization of field data forms.
  4. Data validation and cleaning.
  5. Data set transformation according to Darwin Core standards.
  6. Taxonomic validation, final quality control
