Description

Within this dataset data on captured and ringed birds on the Zmiinyi island is provided. The data covers the period from 1975 to 1992 and separate studies conducted in spring 2006. For a number of birds, data on the main biometric measurements (bill length, beak length, wing length, weight, etc.) are provided. Data are provided regarding the phenology of individual species - the date of the first appearance of the species and the date of mass appearance. Particular records provided refer to the registrations of a number of rare and endangered species for the territory of Ukraine.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 1,771 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Geographic Coverage

The dataset consists of records from Zmiinyi island (Odesa administrative region of Ukraine, Black Sea). As the dataset shows results of studies of migratory birds spotted on the relatively small island - centroid of this island (45.254466 N 30.202416 E) is provided as a coordinate with relevant coordinate inaccuracy in meters, as the birds were migrating and therefore are not the sedentary inhabitants of the island.

Bounding Coordinates South West [45.254, 30.202], North East [45.254, 30.202]

Taxonomic Coverage

The dataset consists of records of birds (Aves class) only.

Project Data

“Saving Biodiversity Data in Wartime” project aims to contribute to the protection and conservation of biological diversity in Ukraine during and after the war, by collecting, digitalizing and publishing the primary biodiversity data held by Ukrainian scientists and environmentalists in war-affected territories. The project is implemented by Oleksii Marushchak, 2023 Eastern Partnership Civil Society Fellow.

Sampling Methods

The information was taken from field journals (notebooks) kept by a world known ornithologist A. I. Korzukov for the period 1975-1992 and an electronic document presenting the results of catching birds on the Zmiinyi island (Odesa region) by A. I. Korzukov and M. V. Yakovliev in the spring of 2006. Most of the data in the description are the results of catching birds on the island using mist webs. Data on visual observations of birds are partially provided, and separate data on birds that were found dead are presented. Birds were identified, measured and ringed using the commonly accepted methods.

Study Extent The dataset consists of records of birds made on the territory of Zmiinyi island during catches in the migration periods. These records were kept in field notebooks and punched cards of A. I. Korzukov. The dataset is an attempt to save the collected data of this remarkable ornithologist and make it available for the global scientific community and future generations and save the data from physical destruction due to full-scale war initiated by Russia agains Ukraine.
Quality Control The collection of scientific material and its processing was carried out by qualified ornithologists (e. g. Korzukov A. I. - remarkable and world known ornithologist) who worked in the region for a long time.

Method step description:

  1. Collection of field data in a field notebook.
  2. Transferring information to punched cards.
  3. Transferring information from punched cards and notebook to the electronic database using MS Excel and organizing of the dataset according to Darwin Core requirements.
