Description

The dataset contains data from the results of synchronous bird counts in the wetlands of the Azov-Black Sea region in August 2006. The records were carried out within the framework of the Regional Ornithological Monitoring Program (ROM), information about which is presented on the website https://www.izan.kiev.ua/rom/. August records within the framework of this program are held once every three years and are coordinated by the Azov-Black Sea Ornithological Station. A total of 32 wetlands of various sizes were examined, of which 14 are areas of international importance (Ramsar sites). Accounting at all wetlands was carried out according to a single standard methodology. An important condition was the registration before the start of the waterfowl hunting season. The information presented refers to 96 species of birds ecologically associated with wetlands and 76 species that were also recorded during the surveys, but do not belong to this ecological group.

Data Records

The data in this sampling event resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 62 records.

Project Data

With the help of the project two more publishers from Ukraine were registered. This means that despite rocket attacks, close to the front line, lack of light... Lviv, Kharkiv, Odesa and Melitopol continue to work on publication of scientific archives of the West-Ukrainian Ornithological Society and Azov-Black Sea Ornithological Working Group. Both organizations registered with GBIF and our operators have already handed over the first sets data for publication. And this means that more than 10,000 verified records of bird registrations will appear with open access.

Title «Відкрита наука: співпраця орнітологів Львова і Мелітополя для збереження наукової спадщини»
Funding The project is supported by ЗMIN Foundation.
Study Area Description The project covers the entire territory of Ukraine.

Andriy Bokotey

Sampling Methods

The basic accounting method, with the help of wich the records were made, is the absolute recording of birds in well-observed areas (sectors) of wetlands and adjacent lands. The water areas of small reservoirs are completely surveyed from the shore, large ones - from water transport. All birds associated with these wetlands, including those flying over it, are taken into account. Counting is carried out from an optimal distance that does not allow the birds to be alarmed and, at the same time, allows the observer to accurately determine their species and number. Linear accounting transects are carried out only in solid reed thickets, swampy floodplain forests, floodplain meadows overgrown with shrubs and other areas where a survey of the entire water or land area is impossible. The coordinates of the plot center were determined in the free software QGIS, version 3.4. Observations were carried out with the help of 10-12x binoculars and 30-60x telescopes, photography was carried out whenever possible. In case of an incomplete survey of the entire wetland, the authors of the observations displayed the surveyed territory on the map. Detailed information about methods is available via the following link: https://www.izan.kiev.ua/rom/methods.htm

Study Extent The data is given in total for the entire wetland. In certain large areas of the wetlands (Tendra Bay, Molochnyi Lyman, Utlyutskyi Lyman, i.e.) data is presented on standard sections of this wetland. The configuration of the accounting areas as a whole coincides with certain landscape elements characterized by more or less uniform natural and anthropogenic conditions. All boundaries are drawn on the map used during accounting. The coordinates of the centeroid of the wetland or the area of the wetland are indicated as standard coordinates in the dataset table. In the coordinateUncertaintyInMeters field, the largest distance from the center of the plot to its borders is indicated.
Quality Control The authors of the dataset are fully responsible for the quality of the published data.

Method step description:

  1. Conducting of a field survey within the previousely chosen plot/wetland/land area according to the standard method.
  2. Counting of the birds with simultaneous identification of species.
  3. Creating maps of the records made.
  4. Georeferencing and creating of the lists of registered species and specimens.
  5. Organizing of the dataset according to the DarwinCore standards.
